- Peaceful site in a pine forest on Croatia’s Istrian peninsula
- Snorkelling at Beach Cava 20 minutes' drive; Pula half an hour
- Horseback excursions, swimming pool and large playground on site
Love horses? Then chances are you’ll love staying at Camp Dvor, on the southern fringes of the Istrian peninsula. That’s because this peaceful, family-friendly site is part of Ranch Barba Tone, which organises horseback excursions around the local countryside, plus sunset/sunrise rides and (get this) swimming-with-horses sessions.
But before you get your riding hat on and head to the ranch, you might like to explore the site that will be home during your Croatian holiday. Camp Dvor sits in an ancient pine forest, on the outskirts of the village of Manjadvorci (five minutes’ walk). A small shop there sells basic necessities; for anything else, there’s a supermarket in Marčana (10 minutes’ drive along the D66 road), a larger village with a pizzeria, a couple of bars and a pharmacy.
Put your purchases in the communal fridge until it’s time to light up the barbecue (there's one provided so no need to lug your own along), then relax in the shade of the tall trees with your dog (a welcome guest here) snoozing beside you, or swim a few laps in the outdoor pool. Meanwhile, the kids can expend their excess energy in the large playground or help feed the goats, rabbits and ducks at the ranch.
A modern toilet block with showers, a washing-up area and charging facilities are among the amenities at the site.

Local attractions
There are adventure courses for all ages and abilities at Glavani Park (five minutes’ drive), with features including cargo nets, log bridges and ziplines. The park also has a climbing wall and a 20-metre platform (with views as far as the Adriatic Sea) for freefall bungee-like jumps.
The rugged coast of the Istrian peninsula is dotted with sheltered coves and secluded beaches. Known for the sunken boat on its north eastern shore, pebbly Luka Beach (15 minutes) is surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. Or you can stretch out on the flat rocks at Wild Beach (15 minutes) or go snorkelling in the clear waters off Beach Cava (20 minutes).
Dating back to the first century, the three-storey Roman amphitheatre in Pula (half an hour) is now used as an atmospheric concert venue. Other Roman constructions in the city include the Temple of Augustus and the Arch of the Sergii, a former city gate. Several outfits at the harbour arrange boat trips to see sunsets and dolphins.
