For those that do feel the urge to get boots on and go wandering, there are several fine options within easy reach: Paklenica is the closest of the national parks at half an hour’s drive, but it’s not too far to get to Lake Vrana (45 minutes), the waterfalls of Krka National Park (50 minutes) or the famed Plitvice Lakes (an hour and 20 minutes). If you’re up for scaling some of Croatia’s tallest peaks, it’ll take you around an hour and 20 minutes to drive to the Velebit mountains. The national parks aren’t just mainland-based: the Kornati Islands have had that status bestowed on them too, in recognition of their immense gorgeousness. Boat trips to take in some of the finest vistas leave from the harbour in Zadar (25 minutes), as do diving trips to see what lies beneath the surface of those turquoise waters. Also around Zadar are activity centres that can sort you with days of horse riding, sailing and sea kayaking, and an adventure park with high ropes courses and ziplines. For rafting outings, you’re best zooming up to Zrmanja (50 minutes).
