Looking up at the stars is generally a wonderful thing to do while camping – but have you ever wondered what you’re seeing when you stare up into the night sky? The place to find out the answer is Astrocamping Villa de Leyva, in the little Boyacá town of Villa de Leyva.
This small, simple site is all set up to make the most of the region’s dark skies, running stargazing sessions on site where guests can gather to look through powerful telescopes and listen to expert commentary on the constellations, nebulae and other objects of interest overhead. There’s an extra charge for these two-hour sessions and you’ll need to book ahead, so just drop the site a note with your chosen date while making your booking.
Pitches here are well spaced out for privacy, comfort and safety, with at least two metres between each pitch. Guests all have access to hot water, a wifi service, a laundry service, a fridge and a dining room where you can eat meals whatever the weather. Barbecues are permitted for outdoor meals on warmer days, and you can buy firewood on site (and also hire handy things like blankets and firepits to keep you cosy).
This location isn’t just a great one for stargazing: it’s also a good base for walks and other outdoor activities around the surrounding countryside. And being fairly central within the town means that you can easily get to restaurants, cafés and shops within a short walk.

Local attractions
Start your trip with a wander around Villa de Leyva – this pretty little town has lots of colonial buildings to admire along with the impressive Plaza Mayor (the biggest such square in Colombia, in fact). The history goes back much further than colonial times though, as you’ll find out when you visit the Prehistoric Museum, the Fossil Museum and the Palaeontology Museum (or the Sol Muisca theme park if you’ve brought kids).
A little further out of town are several farms with waterfalls, as well as the attractive Pozos Azules (15 minutes’ drive) for a walk by the stunningly blue lakes. To see some of the area’s wildlife, take your binoculars to Iguaque Natural Park (20 minutes), where birds gather by a sacred lagoon, or head south to the Ostrich Farm (15 minutes).
If you’d like to up the activity levels after you’ve done a couple of walks, take a trip to Aventura Park (half an hour), where all sorts of thrills await, including a climbing wall, aerial bikes, ziplines and bungee jumping – all with a gorgeous landscape as the backdrop.
