It's free, quick and easy!
- Hillside site in the mountains above Taganga fishing village
- A five-minute walk from beaches and 20 minutes' drive from Santa Marta
- Communal outdoor area for grilling, and a shared living room-kitchen
In a pretty cove close to both a city and a natural park is the small fishing village of Taganga, a scenic and sheltered spot in Caribe’s Magdalena county. It’s less than a kilometre from the village’s spotless sand and shingle beach to La Jauna Eco Aldea, a family-friendly site on one of the hillsides that hug the village.
There are views towards the beach from the site, but no time should be wasted before venturing seawards. This part of Colombia is renowned for its snorkelling, diving, surfing and boat trips, so getting onto or into the water is a must. More of a landlubber? Stick to the lengthy beach to soak up some rays.
When a break from sand is needed, stick around site for comfy days of relaxation in the shared living room-kitchen, where there’s a small library guests can use. Curl up with a book – or take a well-deserved nap – in the hammock, or take instead to the shared terrace to read in the outdoors and watch the birds flitting by overhead.
Eating is a cinch hereabouts too: there’s a wealth of local bars and eateries in Taganga but if you prefer a more self-catered approach, a grilling area and small kitchen are on site for guests’ use.

Local attractions
It’s understandably hard round here to resist the call of the beach; for a change of sandy scenery, a 10-minute drive will land guests at the sheltered white sands of Playa Grande for more swims and sunbathing.
Sticking with time outdoors, it’s 45 minutes from base to Tayrona National Park, a densely forested area in the foothills of Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta range, hugging the Caribbean coastline. Travel hither for scenic trekking, jaguar, armadillo, ocelot and anteater spotting, birdwatching, and even more white-sand beaches.
For city days, head to Santa Marta (20 minutes' drive), to explore the Tairona Gold Museum, traipse through the aquarium, wander the Old Town or pay homage at the deathplace of Simón Bolívar. Those keen on ancient cities may also note this to be the starting point of multi-day hikes to Ciudad Perdida.
For time spent in the mountainous rainforests without to trek for several days, make tracks instead for the small town of Minca (55 minutes) – the starting point for several mountain hikes, as well as a top birdwatching spot, the location of several coffee plantations, and the home of the Cacao Museum.
