  • Family-friendly site in spectacular Tayrona National Natural Park
  • Peaceful walk along jungle tracks to stunning Caribbean beaches
  • An hour’s drive from the shops, restaurants and sights of Santa Marta
Picture the scene: you, cold beer in hand, lazing in a hammock in a Caribbean jungle while monkeys swing through the trees and colourful birds flit by overhead… bliss, yes? That’s exactly what you’re signing up for with a stay at Camping Don Pedro, a family-friendly site an hour’s drive from the city of Santa Marta in the Magdalena department of Colombia. The site’s in Tayrona National Natural Park, so expect palm trees, lush greenery and – far from towns and villages – nothing but the calls of the wild and the wind through the trees to disturb your calm. Spend your days following trails through the jungle, aiming at least once for the sands of the nearby Arrecifes beach (good for sand, sun and views, dangerous for swimming), and keeping an eye out for tamarins, iguanas and toucans, and the more deadly jaguars and caimans. When you’re ready for some eats, retreat to home base and trot over to the restaurant for some home-cooked meals and a few drinks. There are basic cooking facilities too if you want to look after yourself, but be sure to stock up on supplies before you arrive. This is proper jungle living – there’s a small food shop on site, but it’s a bit of a trek to get to anything else.

Local attractions

You can’t come all this way, so close to the Caribbean, and not make it your business to head to a swimmable beach as soon as poss. Arrecifes might be too dodgy for a dip, but the natural pools of La Piscina and the famed sands (and mirror beach) of Cabo San Juan are reachable on foot. There’s coral reef along this stretch of coastline too, so be sure to sign up for some scuba diving or snorkelling… If you’re not one for sun worshipping all day, Cabo is the starting point for a couple of jungle hikes that come highly recommended: strike out on the Nine Stones trail to see more of Tayrona, or forge your way to the ruins of the indigenous Tairona city of Pueblito. Cabo's a good spot for nabbing some Caribbean-influenced meals too: look out for the fresh fish, ceviche and patacones (fried slices of plantain), and snag some fresh juices from the stalls. If you’re craving a bit of urban after spending a few days with nothing but jungle, clamber into the car and head off to Santa Marta, just over an hour away. Here, you can learn more about Colombia’s past with stops at revolutionary Simon Bolivar’s home (Quinta de San Pedro Alejandro) and the Tairona Gold Museum, or keep to the present at the Rodadero Sea Aquarium and Museum.
