- Cabin stays in the middle of a native forest edging Santa Elena
- A 20-minute drive from José María Córdova airport and 35 from Medellín
- Restaurant and food shop; ravine bordering the grounds for walks
Collar yourself a cute cabin among the native trees at Cabañas Solentiname in a forest near the Santa Elena township close to Medellín. A break at this bolthole in Guane, home to various species of birds, plants and flowers, is an excellent way to escape the city for a couple of days (or a few months if luck’s on your side…).
Stretch out in one of the private cabins scattered around the grounds, each one decorated in either a rustic or modern style, and all including a fireplace, fully equipped kitchen, gas-powered shower and a terrace or balcony with fantastic forest views.
While the park is rural and restful, it’s also easy to reach: José María Córdova International Airport is around 20 minutes’ drive and the outskirts of Medellín are 35 minutes away. Not got a car? No problem – the site’s accessible on public transport.
Once you’re here, a ravine on the boundaries of the park is a tiptop place for a totter in nature and the park’s around 10 minutes’ drive from the Cerro Verde viewpoint for soaking up the scenery of the San Nicolas valley. Set off to this dreamy destination to catch a stunning sunset or spend evenings in the restaurants and bars of Santa Elena (10 minutes).
Cabañas Solentiname also has an eatery and a food shop in its grounds.

Local attractions
The township of Santa Elena is famed for the flower bouquets made here for the traditional Silleteros Parade. If you’re not in the area during the festival in August, you can still visit the surrounding silletero (flower vendor) farms to learn about the crafting process that goes into these arty arrangements.
Another local place of interest is the 16,000-hectare Arví Park, a forest reserve with guided walks available across trails dating back some 1,500 years. Access a cable car here that will whisk you down the hills across the rooftops of the city’s surrounding favelas and into the centre of Medellín.
When in the metropolis, set off for explores of the parks and squares – a couple of the best include Plaza Botero in the Old Quarter, sprinkled with smile-sparking sculptures by famed artist Botero, and Parque Lleras with its sprawling selection of street food stalls and musicians.
If all the urban sightseeing has you craving nature, nosey around the city’s botanical gardens, covering more than 14 hectares’ worth of 4,500 flowers and 140 different species of bird.
Outside Medellin (an hour and a half), Guatapé could be your next destination for a reservoir with a series of inlets to bounce between by boat.
