  • Family-friendly spot 20 minutes from Barrie and Orillia
  • Watersports paradise: wakeboarding, jetskiing, kayaking, tubing
  • Indoor pool, hot tub and large playground on site
City excursions, watersports and a hot tub for relaxing weary joints… Dream holiday material? Head to family-friendly Heidi’s Campground on the outskirts of the village of Hawkestone, less than 20 minutes’ drive from the cities of Barrie and Orillia in Simcoe County, Ontario. Heidi’s is five minutes from the shore of Lake Simcoe, and is well-placed for forays onto the water – Barrie and Orillia are launching points for a whole host of watersports, from kayaking and tubing to kiteboarding, wakeboarding and jetskiing. There’s plenty to do back at Heidi’s too: try your luck at the horseshoe pit, let the kids blow off steam at the playground, keep Rex exercised at the dog run area and you exercised on the fitness track, rack them up at the pool table or challenge your vacation buddies to a game of basketball or volleyball. After all that, unwind with a hot tub session or cool off with a dip in the indoor pool. During the high season, there are scheduled activities over the weekend, so kick back and take it all in. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the Hawkestone general store for supplies then get to grilling on the barbecue – tuck in next to your campfire with Rex lying out by your side. If you need a break from cooking, there are plenty of restaurants in Barrie and Orillia to choose from.

Local attractions

There may already be activities planned for the high season, but if you’re looking for some evening entertainment away from base you won’t have to go far – catch a show at the Burl’s Creek concert venue or snuggle up with your honey at the Barrie Triple Drive-In Theatre, both 10 minutes’ drive from Heidi’s Campground. The waterfront cities of Barrie and Orillia are certainly worth visiting. In Orillia, poke around museums and galleries, grab the best produce at the farmers’ markets and explore the street art exhibits in the downtown area. Barrie’s a top spot for antiquing and brewing, and Heritage Estate Winery and Cidery should definitely be on your list. For a taste of Canadian history, you should be making your way to Base Borden Military Museum, the Sir Frederick Banting Museum at Banting House (the home of insulin), or the Bygone Days Heritage Village to get a feel for Canadian heritage through the decades. If you’ve got the kids with you (or even if you don’t), head to Big Curve Acres Farm – a minute’s drive from Heidi's – to spend some time at the petting zoo and to learn about horses and other farm animals, or travel the 30 minutes to Elmvale Jungle Zoo for something a little more exotic.
