- Leafy, family-friendly site 20 minutes’ drive from Nova Petrópolis
- Cascata Jammerthal trail 15 minutes’ drive; Novo Hamburgo one hour
- Resident ponies and geese; fishing pond; shop selling local produce
Vegetation-covered hills as far as the eye can see, dramatic waterfalls and an alpine vibe are some of the characteristics of the area around Nova Petrópolis, a city in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state in Brazil. And within these lush surroundings (combining palms and fir trees) is Chacara Villagio das Pedras, a small, peaceful site with shaded grass pitches.
It’s a popular spot for families with children for several reasons – among them, the fact that it’s fully fenced (which ought to make security-conscious parents happy) and the fact that it is home to a small menagerie of friendly animals (which should please most children). Because of these resident beasties (ponies, sheep, geese…), if you travel with your own canine companion, please be sure to keep it on a lead while on site. There’s also a small pond where the kids can learn the basics of fishing.
Sociable guests spend their evenings making new friends at the communal kitchen area, a sheltered space with a barbecue and dining table, plus a padded swing where you can relax in between checking on the progress of your meal. The good news is that you don’t have to go far for provisions, since the site has a shop selling local produce and regional wines. For anything else, the nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away, or there are loads more shops (plus heaps of dining options) in Nova Petrópolis (20 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions
The surrounding forest is dotted with splendid waterfalls, such as Cascata Jammerthal (reached by a trail starting a 15-minute drive from the site), which thunders down along what looks like a gigantic boulder, and Cascata da Helga (20 minutes), in lush surrounds. Cascata Marcondes (half an hour) has several steps and a natural swimming pool.
The Botanical Garden in Caxias do Sul (one hour) takes in a large area of forest along the banks of the Rio Tega and sits next door to an ecopark with sports facilities and a children’s playground. In town, the Museu Ambiência Casa de Pedra explores the life of Italian immigrants who moved to the area in the 1870s.
A corner of Germany in the south of Brazil, Novo Hamburgo (one hour) is home to the half-timbered Schmitt-Presser Museum and the vertical columns of the Monument to the Shoemaker. A 20-minute drive further south takes you to Park Zoo Sapucaia do Sul, home to zebras, primates and rhinos.
