It's free, quick and easy!
- Peaceful shaded site among a coconut grove with direct beach access
- Less than an hour's drive from the state capital of Natal
- Quad bike, horseback and dune buggy tours, plus diving and snorkeling
Soft sands… swaying coconut palms… crystal clear waters… you could spend many an hour daydreaming of such things. Or you could pack your bags, set off for Aldeia Maracajaú Camping and experience it in high-definition, surround-sound 3D reality…
This dreamy tropical beach is Parrachos de Maracajau, part of a marine reserve in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Norte region. If you can’t quite believe how gorgeous it is, feel free to come back for as many looks as you like – there’s direct access to the beach from the site, meaning you can stroll out onto the sands whenever you wish to check that it’s all real.
Beachy loafing is a fine idea of course, but if you fancy something a little more active there’s also fishing and kitesurfing to be done, and diving or snorkel tours to take you out to pretty pristine parts of the nearby reef. Landlubbers can take it all in on quad biking or horse riding tours organised from the site.
Seaside eats should certainly be on the menu too – and they’re easily sorted at Maxaranguape’s little line of seafood restaurants, which look out over the shoreline five minutes’ stroll away. There’s a bar and restaurant at the resort as well, along with an outdoor communal kitchen for self-catering folk who’ve picked up supplies at the town’s supermarkets or bakeries.

Local attractions
Parrachos de Maracajau is praised by locals and visitors alike as one of the finest beaches around these parts – but any self-respecting beach buff will surely want to check that assertion by paying a visit to some of its competitors.
If you’ve got a car to get about in, it's around 20 minutes to Barra de Punaú beach for shallow swims and kayaking, or half an hour to Jacumã, home of some daredevil activities including downhill sandboarding and ziplining across the lagoon.
Rio Grande do Norte's state capital Natal is around 50 minutes' drive away, and there’s more beach to see along this popular bit of coastline. History buffs can take a tour of the 16th-century Forte dos Reis Magos, while those who are just up for a good time can fill their time with family-friendly beaches, restaurants and all sorts of organised excursions.
While you're near Natal, stop by at the beach of Ponta Negra (an hour’s drive from the site) – especially if you’re into surfing. These are some of the best waves around, bringing you back to a shoreline towered over by the massive Morro do Careca sand dune and with a bouncing beach bar scene.
