Beach time? Family days out? City wanders? Put it all on the menu when you stay at Vakantiepark Hippodroom – this family-friendly West Flanders site is just five minutes’ walk from Bredene beach, and in a very handy location for all sorts of excellent days out. Wander up to the beach whenever you fancy it – it’s a real gem, with almost three miles of soft sand, dunes to play in and a gentle slope providing shallow waters for the kids to paddle in. Bring your watersports kit along for days of paddleboarding or kitesurfing, or hire it all on site for easy days on the waves. Bring bikes too, because the famously flat Flanders countryside is fantastic for cycling and there are numerous routes nearby for a good bike ride with the family. You can cycle all the way to Ostend in about half an hour (or ride the Coast Tram for a similar amount of time) to visit its historic sights, museums and marina or hit the shops and restaurants. Other days out nearby might take you to Sea Life Blankenberge and Plopsaland De Panne or for a wander around the pretty medieval architecture of Bruges. Once you’ve made it back to the site, you’ll be staying on grass pitches with access to a play area and pétanque court as well as bathrooms with toilets and showers. The informal Hippo12 café is also on site, serving up tasty snacks as well as wines and speciality beers for a chilled-out evening.

Disliked: The motorhome pitches seemed really unsuitable, located on rutted ground, with plastic debris and building materials scattered around. We were wondering if the site was actually in development. The toilets and shower blocks were clean, but unsure if it’s mixed sex use. The signs indicated female but couldn’t see where the facilities were for men. And they were locked on the morning we were due to leave by 10am, so we were disappointed not to be able to use them. There didn’t seem to be a dedicated toilet disposal point so we had to use the main toilets to dispose of waste which is not great. There was an onsite pub which was pretty lively on the Saturday night until midnight, but was quieter on the Sunday. The location was nice but the facilities need a bit more attention to detail.

Local attractions

Nearby Ostend (15 minutes’ drive/half an hour by bike or tram) is a good first outing – take a walk along the stylish seafront, take a boat ride to Fort Napoléon and get arty with visits to the James Ensor House and Mu.ZEE. Look out for street art as you wander too – there are lots of colourful murals to seek out. Bruges (half an hour’s drive) is another popular place to explore, with medieval streets to wander through, boat tours on the canals and lots of great places to sample traditional Flemish cuisine. Climb to the top of the Belfort for excellent views across the town as well. If you need a break from urban life, plan outings to IJzermonding Nature Reserve or Westhoek Nature Reserve (both 40 minutes). For family days out, check out all the marine creatures at Sea Life Blankenberge (20 minutes) or get set for a full day of colourful rides and shows at Plopsaland De Panne (40 minutes).

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leashes and supervised at all times.
The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.
