  • Peaceful park among the green outdoors of the Kempen
  • Popular region to access outdoor activities by foot, bike or car
  • Sociable bar and café, with regular summer events
What a pretty part of Belgium this is – in the green Kempen, the north-eastern Belgium (and south-eastern Netherlands) region making up a popular place to retreat for remote breaks among scenic landscapes of pine forest, wetlands, moors and sandy heath. Among the Kempen and in the Antwerp province near the small town of Kasterlee is Camping Houtum, a spacious, popular but peaceful place just under an hour's drive from Antwerp. It's a family-friendly and dog-friendly site, with bike and walking paths all around these nature-filled and quiet parts. The site has a sand volleyball area, a playground and a pétanque court to keep you occupied – and might you desire drinkies too? As any self-respecting barfly will know, a truly good bar (or restaurant) can be measured by whether it's popular with locals as well as holidaymakers: the lively bar-restaurant at Camping Houtum most certainly fits the boozy and foodie bill, as many a local drops in here for tipples and vittles. Make your way to the bar in the afternoon or evening for a bite to eat, a mojito, a natter with locals or other guests, or a beery afternoon with your book – or head to the site's Café de Congé for indoor and outdoor games, more nattering options and snacks and drinks. Regular events in high season include billiards evenings and nights for cards, bingo, dancing and barbecues. Camping Houtum is an excellently-maintained site, family run since 1975. It's well laid out in green surroundings with spacious pitches, and well-kept amenities including showers and toilets.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: lovely campsite not too far from Antwerpen but far enough to be quiet and peaceful. Cleanest campsite facilities we have been in and lovely little cafe, just a shame it wasn't dog friendly.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice, clean and well organised campsite with friendly and helpful staff. Very close to a great theme park.

Disliked: For tent dwellers, the campsite advertised that the car can be parked by the unit, however this was not the case. We had to park our car about 30 metres away, which isn’t too bad but still not ideal.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: The welcome we received from the young lady on reception was beyond helpful, she was warm friendly and even helped plan future parts of our trip. The bathrooms were warm and clean. Although we didn’t take advantage of the fresh bread service this was a great touch. Loved the location the whole area is nice, clean and such a nice place to venture around.

Disliked: I found the prepaid shower cards a bit over kill and the rate of which the money is charged at is very quick. the pitches were well spaced but no path to walk on which on pitch field so not good if wet in the morning.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The pumpkins were amazing!

Disliked: The pitch was advertised as being able to park next to the tent, but this was not the case. The tent camping area is a car free zone. You can park very close to the camping area, but have to walk around a fence to go between tent and car. This became a bit frustrating in the heavy rain.

Local attractions

Around the Kempen, dozens of activities and options for days out are available within 50 kilometres – at most – of the site. There's paintballing and laser quest; mooching around flea markets; dips in public pools; family farms; spas and saunas; indoor skiing; amusement parks; a casino and a couple of dozen museums… Among all that lot, the closest attractions and activities are the indoor play centre and miniature golf course a few minutes' drive away in Kasterlee; the Bobbejaanland amusement park and the laser quest and paintballing centre of lasergames, both at Lichtaart, and the rather fab National Playing Card Museum, within about 20 minutes' drive at Turnhout. You also must have an amble around Antwerp if you're staying in the region: the province capital just under an hour's drive away has plenty to see and do, such the glittering diamond district (coo sweetly/ beseechingly at your other half) and the 14th-century cathedral displaying four paintings by Rubens.
