- Peaceful caravan park a 10-minute walk from the seafront in Rye
- Peninsula Hot Springs five minutes’ drive; Fort Nepean half an hour
- Playground, games room and communal barbecue area, plus a laundry
If you’re looking to stay somewhere quiet, with easy access to a sandy beach and the calm waters of Port Phillip bay, family- and dog-friendly Kanasta Caravan Park might well be it. This leafy spot in the seaside resort of Rye, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, has well-maintained gardens and amenities (including hot water and a launderette), plus on-site staff for any assistance you might need.
In addition to cooking facilities within your accommodation, the site has a communal barbecue, so you can make new friends while chatting at the grill or in the large picnic area. Your kids, meanwhile, have likely bonded with their contemporaries in the playground or the games room. There’s a general store a five-minute drive away; alternatively, if you don’t fancy cooking, Point Nepean Road (10 minutes' walk) is lined with restaurants and cafés.
The beach is also a 10-minute walk away, and it’s easy to while away a few days just lazing on the sand, swimming or snorkelling in the clear waters. If you’re feeling more active, there are pleasant coastal strolls to be had along the Bay Trail all the way to the western end of the beach, where a path leads to the White Cliffs Lookout Rye, with views across Port Phillip bay. Outfits like Timeout Fishing Charters run fishing trips from the pier, which is also the starting point for a scuba trail (Octopus’s Garden) with informative signs about the local sea creatures.

Local attractions
Kanasta sells priority passes for Peninsula Hot Springs (five minutes’ drive), where you can have a relaxing soak in natural geothermal waters. There are multiple pools here, including a hilltop one with expansive views over the Mornington Peninsula, another carved out of the rock and a moon-viewing pool for stargazing.
Cable cars depart from Arthurs Seat Eagle - Base Station (15 minutes) and travel up to Arthurs Seat State Park, on a wooded peak with far-reaching views of the coast – and as far as Melbourne on a clear day. You can also take your bike on a flight and explore various mountain-biking trails in the area.
Fort Nepean (half an hour), at the westernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula, was constructed at the end of the 19th century to protect the entrance to the bay. Today you can wander through its tunnels and barracks and see gun emplacements and a bomb-proof room.
