- Direct access to marked bush walks, including a trail to Upper Portals
- Central bush hall with a fully-equipped kitchen; hot showers on site
Gorges, rainforests, creeks, lakes and waterfalls… that’s just a taste of the landscapes surrounding Mt Barney Wilderness Camping. This bush retreat is a 130-hectare property made up of forests and hills in the McPherson Range mountains, two hours’ drive away from Brisbane. Down a series of tracks suitable for four wheel drives, this place has been designed as an authentic, basic bush retreat with a few extra luxuries…
These luxuries come in the form of a central bush hall housing a fully-equipped kitchen, so you’ll have gas rings, a wood oven, fridge and washing-up sinks at your disposal. When you’ve rustled something up, there’s a large dining area with a wood heater to tuck into your grub. Other handy facilities include bathrooms with hot showers and flushing toilets.
Sturdy hiking boots will come in handy when the morning arrives, because Mt Barney Wilderness Camping overlooks a specially-constructed wildlife dam home to birds, wallabies and frogs and next to that is Mount Barney National Park…
So, begin your first bushwalk on your own or with an expert guide provided by the retreat. There are marked tracks from the property that lead to lookouts, mountain vistas, rainforest trails, gorges, waterfalls, many in the Mount Barney National Park.
They’re typically less than four hours long, with grades for walkers of all stamina, but just ask the staff for some tougher routes or to join in with a guided walk into the ancient rainforests of Gondwana Rainforest if you like. A popular five-kilometre trail will fast-track you to the Upper Portals, where you can cool off in the rockpools at a group of waterfalls between the Barney Creek and Logan river.

Route directions
Please do not rely on GPS or online mapping systems when you drive along Waterfall Creek Road, as they are likely to direct you onto the wrong four wheel drive track from the locked gate at the end of Waterfall Creek Road. Site staff can escort you from the gate or from the bottom of the hills.

Local attractions
Be the captain for a day… while there are plenty of rainforests, waterfalls and mountain lookouts nearby, this is also a good place to take charge of your water vessel of choice. On Lake Maroon (40 minutes’ drive), canoes, kayaks, pedalos and boats are all up for grabs. Afterwards, a picnic onshore is sure to treat any grumbling tummies after an afternoon of such watersports or jetskiing and waterskiing.
Moogerah Dam (an hour) is all about those high-powered types of rides. Jetskiing, waterskiing, wakeboarding and tubing are all ways to get dunked here (or not, if you’re skilled enough).
While you’re up this away, a challenging climb can be found at the stunning Waterfall Gorge (an hour) or there are more bush walks, this time along ancient volcanoes, accessible in the Moogerah Peaks National Park (an hour and 10 minutes).
For more views and peaks, the forest trails at Yellow Pinch Reserve Park (an hour and five minutes) are splendid as can be.
