Book into Fossickers Tourist Park at Nundle, where you can pan for gold in the Peel River just behind the pitches, which have farmland or hill views. Whether you’re camping as a couple, or with family and friends, this leafy and relaxing waterside spot makes a great place to stay.
Family-friendly facilities include a parent-and-baby washroom, an accessible shower block, and a laundry and drying room – are all kept meticulously clean. A communal camp kitchen with fridges to keep stuff cool and grills for barbecuing takes care of catering needs, and there are plenty of nooks and crannies around the grounds for picnicking in the sun.
You can hike along the river from the campsite, play a game of tennis or explore the surrounding bushland on horseback. There’s nearly always a music or foodie festival going off in Nundle (five minutes’ walk), a former gold-prospecting town founded in 1854 during the Gold Rush – and there’s still gold in the river, so why not see if you can find some?

Local attractions
The gold-mining heritage is deeply embedded into Nundle (five minutes’ walk), a historic mining town with a glittering collection of gold and gemstones displayed at the Information Centre. Understand the backstory of the colonial gold rush at Mount Misery Gold Mine Museum, pick up bespoke textiles at Nundle Woollen Mill, one of the oldest operation spinning mills left in Australia, and have a potter around boutiques selling jewellery and gems.
For more active pursuits, try swimming, sailing, boating or fishing for trout on the Chaffey Dam (15 minutes’ drive), keeping an eye out for pelicans and ibis as you go. Right next to the campground, cycle along the riverside path sheltered by plane trees, or if you’re keen to get out into the forest, take a bush walk on a section of the long-distance Fossickers Way.
'Fossicking' is the local word for panning for precious metals or stones, and if you’d like to try your luck, hire panning equipment at the Mount Misery Gold Mine Museum and see whether you find gold or sapphires in the Peel River.
