- Well-kept and peaceful tourer site on the banks of the Vjosa River
- Tepelena five minutes’ drive, UNESCO-listed Gjirokastër half an hour
- Fully-serviced pitches; watersports, hiking and climbing available
Looking for a remote getaway surrounded by river and mountain views? Wild River Camping, just outside Tepelena in spectacular southern Albania, sounds just the place for you. The site is utterly peaceful – all you can hear is the chirping of birds and the rushing of the waters down the Vjosa River – and yet only half an hour’s drive from the historic city of Gjirokastër, its castle and typical Ottoman houses with stone roofs, arch-shaped windows and galleries.
Spacious touring pitches with drinking water and electric hook-ups overlook the river. Site facilities include showers and loos, a washing machine and dryer, and there’s secure parking as well as easy access off the main road between Tepelena and Gjirokastër.
Once you’re settled in, you can head to the river beach for fishing, swimming and sunbathing as well as picnicking at the water’s edge. Canoes and rafts can be hired to paddle downstream, and there are numerous hiking and climbing routes in the region’s mountains and gorges.

Local attractions
UNESCO-listed Gjirokastër (half an hour’s drive) may be your first port of call; plan to spend the day there exploring its higgledy-piggledy cobbled streets connected by steps as it sprawls gracefully uphill. Have a poke around the colourful bazaar in the Old Town and admire the ornate Ottoman houses in the Manalat Quarter before clambering up to the fortress for views across the city and its surrounding valleys.
Tepelena (five minutes) also has plenty of heritage to its name; its history museum displays traditional regional costumes and relics from antiquity, while the town’s austere castle was once home to the notorious Ali Pasha, who ruled over much of the Ottoman Empire in the early 1800s. Those with a head for heights can cross the Aqueduct of Ali Pasha in Bënçë (10 minutes), built during his reign to bring water to the area.
If you’d rather be hiking than driving around the countryside, there are tumbling waterfalls to discover in the hills surrounding Progonat (half an hour), as well as stunning trails and mountain views in Nivica Canyon (50 minutes).
