Local attractions
So, what’s there to do on Lake Ohrid waterfront? You can go swimming, hire a pedal boat to explore the shoreline or simply soak up the sun on the pebble beaches. If you fancy something a bit more hardcore, hire paddleboards and kayaks or go fishing for trout and carp from Tushemisht (five minutes’ drive). In Pogradec (10 minutes), you can have a wander along the lakefront promenade, stopping off for sunset drinks at the terrace bars.
Drilon National Park (five minutes’ walk) is a hiker’s paradise for its springs and lush vegetation, and when you need to refuel, you can sample Albanian delicacies like lakror savoury pies at waterside restaurants lining the River Drilon. Crossing the border into North Macedonia, Galičica National Park (50 minutes’ drive) makes a great day out for scenic hiking and cycling around Lake Prespa.
If your interests are cultural, ornate Saint Naum Monastery (25 minutes, again in North Macedonia) has Ottoman frescoes on its walls, peaceful water gardens stalked by peacocks and spectacular views over Lake Ohrid. Further north, The Bay of Bones Museum (35 minutes) is an extensive reconstructed village built on stilts over the lake and displaying pottery and animal remains from the Bronze Age.
