  • Secluded site with three coarse fishing lakes in Pembrokeshire
  • A 25-minute drive from Newgale surf beach and 40 minutes from Tenby
  • Folly Farm and Heatherton World of Activities within a half-hour drive
Here’s a fine spot in Pembrokeshire: Ginger Hill is a secluded, family-run site surrounded by woodlands, 15 minutes' drive from Haverfordwest and a relaxing base from which to explore the clifftop walks, castles and beaches of this fab region. If fishing’s your thing, the three coarse fishing lakes should keep you entertained from dawn until sunset; they also attract an abundance of birds and insects if lazing around while species spotting is your thing instead. Campfires and barbecues are welcome on site: listen out for the hoot of barn owls while you sizzle your bangers. Further owl encounters can be had at Picton Castle, a 20-minute drive from the site, whose series of aviaries house 25 different species; the owls come out and fly round the gardens at different times while the house, its 40 acres of woodland and adventure playground should keep everyone flitting about happily for a day. The surfers’ paradise of Newgale beach is 25 minutes away; more watersports and beach walks, sandcastles and sea swims are at Saundersfoot and Tenby, each 40 minutes away. Pubs, eats and supermarkets are close by in Haverfordwest.

What customers say

This wooded campsite gets props for its lovely setting and helpful owner. But, many found the facilities grim, poorly cleaned, with shower puddles and dirty communal fridges. Some found them okay, but others said "festival level."

Powered cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked It was a really beautiful location in such a lovely little woodland area.

Disliked The facilities were grim. The shower had a permanent puddle of water in the centre of it. The toilets you could tell were rarely cleaned. Cassette disposal just out in the open. It’s a shame because it really could have been nice

Local attractions

As well as safe beaches, Tenby has a castle and a fort to explore and is also where you catch the boats to Caldey Island. Home to a community of monks who make and sell perfume, chocolate and biscuits in their shop, it’s also full of wildlife and an almost heavenly abundance of quiet walks on the cliffs and empty beaches. If you’ve caught the bug for boat trips, it’s a 40-minute drive to Martin’s Haven for trips to the islands of Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm, free of humans but teeming with colonies of gannets and puffins. If land-based excitement is more your bag, it’s a five-minute drive to Hangar 5 Trampoline Park and its 10,000 square feet of spring-loaded high larks. It’s all indoors, which makes it a handy venue for those days when the sun’s not playing ball. Bigger thrills are to be found at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (half an hour), meeting the meerkats, standing nose-to-nose with the giraffes and whizzing round on the waltzers in the funfair. Also around half an hour’s drive away are archery, go-karting, laser clay pigeon shooting and bumper boats, along with mini landrovers and an agility course for canine chums at Heatherton World of Activities.
