  • Peaceful, friendly site on a smallholding 2.5 miles from Laugharne
  • 15 minutes from spectacular Carmarthenshire/Pembrokeshire beaches
  • Stargazing haven with campfires allowed; gazebos and awnings welcome
You'll certainly want to wax lyrical when you arrive at this lush little site. Two and a half miles from Dylan Thomas's house at Laugharne, Big Barn Camping is a quiet Carmarthenshire site (with a no-music policy) in a wildlife haven where red kites and other birds of prey regularly soar overhead. The site is on a Georgian farm covering 36 acres of meadows and woodland, and home to sheep, pigs, alpacas, goats, chickens and waterfowl to say hi to during your stay. The views are splendid, looking out over the countryside by day and stars aplenty at night against the flames of your fire; Big Barn is in a stargazing haven, and campfires are allowed. You're welcome to bring along a gazebo or awning too. Off site, it's two and a half miles or under 10 minutes' drive to the coastal town of Laugharne, famed as the final home of Dylan Thomas, 15 minutes to Pendine Sands and 20 to Carmarthen; it's also within 20 minutes of Pembrokeshire beaches at Amroth and Saundersfoot. Walks around Laugharne and the estuary of the River Taf are popular picks for local wanders. The site is eco-friendly, using solar power, compost toilets and full recycling. It's part of the Greener Camping Club Association; customers who are currently non-members can sign up when booking, and a tree will be planted for you, as well as giving you access to over 150 other GCC sites.

What customers say

Reviewers love the tranquil rural setting, stunning views, and generous sites. They rave about the welcoming host, Michael, and the spotless amenities, including hot showers and dishwashing stations. Picnic tables and fire pits at each site are a big hit, as are the dark skies and eco-friendly approach. One guest suggested modernizing the restrooms.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked It's so relaxing and plenty of space for families. You can enjoy the peace, watch the sunrise if you get up early or watch the sunset with a glass of wine.
No music and quiet time is from 10 pm.
It is a small campsite, which is very nice. Three hot showers, two sinks to clean your cutlery and pots if needed. They have soap for you to clean.
The toilets are drop holes. It is a green campsite. The owner is friendly and helpful. He does his rounds and makes sure that everything is clean happy.
He has sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens, goats, geese and 2 llamas.
Ever camping spot has a fire pit, so you don't need to bring one.
He does have safe charging phones for you to use. Which was a plus.

Disliked There is no major dislikes. I would only plan your shopping well. If you need something important, if not then you would need to drive a bit.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Really freindly, very, very well organised. Quiet without being too quiet. Unfortunatley could only stay one night out of 2 booked due to family commitments but will certainly see if we can book a couple of nights before the end of summer and go back next year. Ideal for adventurous families wanting to explore the coast or a base for visiting Tenby

Local attractions

The famed former home of famed Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, The Boathouse, is under 10 minutes' drive from the site. There are spectacular views of the Taf estuary from here (Thomas's first poem after moving in was on the view from his writing shed), and you should be able to see local species like seals and oystercatchers as well as herons and egrets. From The Boathouse (have a sturdy bite to eat in the tearoom first), set off on the mighty Wales Coast Path, the 870-mile route from Chepstow in Monmouthshire north to Queensferry in Flintshire. This is some spectacular scenery (hailed by travel boffins as the best coastal landscape in Britain), so aim to hike as much as you can manage; the Carmarthenshire section is 68 miles and includes the 2,470 acres of the Millennium Coastal Park overlooking the Gower peninsula. A couple of castles are within easy reach (Laugharne is 10 minutes' drive away and Llansteffan 25), but for a day out with a difference drive the 15 minutes to Pendine Sands, home of the splendid Museum of Speed.
