  • Peaceful rural Carmarthenshire site with valley views near Carmarthen
  • A half-hour drive to Oakwood Theme Park and Wild Lakes Wales
  • Fishing the Taf river on site; five minutes’ drive to shops and dining
Sitting in 25 acres of West Wales countryside and with great views of the surrounding valley, The Marsh is well placed for exploring the coastlines of both Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire around Carmarthen. With multiple kids’ attractions within half an hour’s drive, this is a top-notch spot for families with active kids – and their dogs are welcome too. It’s also a cracking choice for anglers, as they can practise casting for salmon, sea trout and bass amid a glorious backdrop of birdsong along the Taf river (extra cost). If you’re looking for a relaxing day on site, have a potter along its nature trails or wander down to the Taf for a waterside stroll. To up the pace a bit, head to the seaside town of Tenby (half an hour’s drive) for splashing around in the sea and boat trips to Caldey Island, or go sailing and windsurfing in Saundersfoot (25 minutes). Back on site, there’s a variety of grass pitches (some uneven and unmown) and simple facilities stretch to a washing-up area, a portable toilet and ice-pack freezing to keep barbecue goodies fresh. Pick up basics in the village of St Clears – where you can also down a caffeine fix – or do bigger shops in Laugharne (both five minutes), home to a ruined castle and displays in the Dylan Thomas Writing Shed. If you prefer, you could dodge the cooking completely and pick up fish and chips to eat back at camp or try a couple of Pembrokeshire brews in a local pub.

What customers say

A peaceful, well-kept campground with spacious spots and amazing views. The friendly, accommodating owner and well-stocked honesty shop with local goods are highly praised. Facilities are generally clean and excellent, though a few guests noted limited toilets/showers. Easy access to attractions & tranquil setting make it a recommended stay.

Liked Lovely friendly welcome from Huw. Pretty, rural site. Basic facilities but that's what we like. What it lacked in amenities it made up for in charm and wonderful countryside.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Absolutely lovely campsite with phenomenal views. Hugh was incredibly welcoming and you can tell he takes a lot of pride in the site. There are friendly farm animals, an honesty farm shop with fresh eggs, and toilet and a shower that were kept nice and clean!
Would definitely stay here again!

Powered grass campsite

Liked Lovely pitch with nice views. Bit strange ur right next to pylons but it was ok. Lovely nature walk by a pond, with sheep.

Disliked 1 toilet/shower between approximately 10 people the 2 nights we stayed, need another shower at least. Not cleaned the 2 days we stayed. All sites we’ve stayed at clean 1,2 or even 3 times a day. There’s only 1 shower so it wouldn’t take long to clean.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review.

I'm glad you enjoyed the view from your pitch and the nature walks around the site.

I'm very disappointed you did not come and speak to me in relation to the shower and toilet.

I would like to apologise if I fell short in my cleaning, but I can assure you those toilets and showers are cleaned every day maybe not to the standard you were expecting and I'll try harder in future.

I only wish I could upload the ccctv images of the toilet and shower being cleaned while you were there.

Thank you Huw

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Huw was so lovely, he stayed an extra hour for us to check in as we were late due to traffic so we were very grateful.
The site is lush with lots of animals to see including chickens, cows, rabbits and we saw a red kite. There's an honesty shop with freshly laid eggs from the site and they were delicious. They also have local honey, meat, milk (saved me this morning) and preserves. Toilet and shower facilities were really nice and in good condition. There's 1 of each on site but it's a small site so not an issue. Would definitely recommend and stay again. Thanks Huw!

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Beyond doubt this is one of the best campsites we have ever stayed at.

The owner cannot do enough to make you feel welcome and the facilities are excellent. The pitches are hard standing, and massive. We got our caravan, awning (you will need rock pegs) and car all on the hardstanding, with loads of space to spare. Each pitch has a nice picnic table, which is a good touch.

Facilities are more than adequate, don’t be put off by them appearing to be in a shed, it is more of a cabin and they are very clean and well appointed.

Then there is the honesty shop, well more of a DIY deli really. The meat, all locally reared is unbelievable, the eggs are fresh from site and everything else is brought in just a few miles.

Lastly there is the view, seldom camped anywhere with a vista like this…

Disliked Having to go home,

Liked The second time staying at the marshand what a lively campsite. Host was friendly and helpful. If you are looking for a wild camping feel but with added extras the marsh is a great place to go. Toilets and showers where always kept clean and tidy, honesty shop on site was fab selling fresh meat and eggs. Very much enjoyed will be returning soon. Great place

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Friendly and helpful owner who clearly loved his land. Huw was enthusiastic and very informative about the site and we enjoyed exploring the area. We were impressed with the bio-diversity and conservation intent. Loved walking along the mown “paths”which were easy to access and thoughtfully laid out with timber laid down where it was a little boggy- although it wasn’t when we were there, despite some heavy recent rain. The facilities were well maintained and the eggs from the hut were excellent.

Local attractions

What a spot for family holidays. You can keep the kids going all day with animal encounters at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (20 minutes’ drive), or challenge them to mini-golf games and paintball fights at Heatherton World of Activities (half an hour). With adrenaline-busting rollercoaster and thrill rides, Oakwood Theme Park (half an hour) is another action-packed day trip for active families. Rather be out in the water? There’s a wave pool and high-impact flume rides at Blue Lagoon Water Park (25 minutes), or you can book family wakeboarding lessons at Wild Lakes Wales (half an hour). On sunny days, jump in the car and head for the beaches in Saundersfoot (half an hour) for some downtime messing about in the waves. To slow things down a bit, the National Botanic Garden of Wales (20 minutes) is a good place for lots of strolls in peaceful landscapes and rare plants in a Norman Foster-designed glasshouse, or you can up the cultural element of your Wales break with a guided tour of Pembroke Castle (35 minutes).
