  • Family campsite on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from Llandovery
  • Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park 25 minutes’ drive
  • Dark-skies site; footpaths from the pitches; pub 10 minutes’ walk
Any hikers and dog walkers among you will be delighted to hear that there are miles of footpaths to waterfalls and forests leading directly from the grass pitches at Glangwenlais Farm, set deep in the Carmarthenshire countryside. Cyclists will be equally chuffed to learn that there are mountain biking trails at Gorlech (half an hour’s drive), and anyone looking for a more urban getaway can nip into the local market town of Llandovery (10 minutes) for their fill of shops, cafés and pubs. That’s lots of bases covered. But the major USP of Glangwenlais is its small handful of pitches, ensuring privacy, peace and quiet on a working farm set in spectacular hill, valley and moorland landscapes, with sheep and cows grazing in neighbouring fields. Hang out on your grass pitch for a while and you’re likely to see red kites and buzzards flying overhead, and on clear days you can wait for darkness and hopefully see shooting stars or the Milky Way dancing in the skies far above. And in the evening, you can potter down to the friendly local pub (10 minutes’ walk) for a couple of pints, bespoke gins and some jolly decent grub.

Local attractions

To explore under your own steam, grab the walking boots or bikes and make for the trails in the Bannau Brycheiniog (aka Brecon Beacons) National Park (25 minutes’ drive). Ancient history is all around in the national park too; you can inspect the ornate markings on the standing stone at Garn Goch Y Gaer Fawr (half an hour), or have a nose around the ancient Bronze Age burial cairn at Tair Carn Uchaf (40 minutes). If historic houses are your thing, have a meander around the medieval barns and towers at Tretower Court and Castle (55 minutes), or clamber up to the romantic ruins of 13th-century Castell Carreg Cennen (40 minutes) – an easy and fun walk for the kids. Talking of the kids, they’ll most probably enjoy the dinosaur park and model Iron Age settlement at the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (45 minutes), or having a snoop around the Norman Foster-built glasshouse stuffed with tropical plants at the National Botanic Garden of Wales (40 minutes). They’ll likely enjoy feeding the raptors at the Red Kite Feeding Station at Llanddeusant (25 minutes) too.
