Bed down in a bunkhouse below the wild Black Mountains in the Amman Valley… with a location just outside of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Cwmaman Community Centre in Carmarthenshire is well based for everything outdoorsy. That includes cycling paths and heaps of walking routes in the surrounding area…
With a hall for dinner times that fits up to 50 people, relaxation is easy here too. The site has a fully-equipped kitchen, so all you’ll need to do is bring your own food, and that’s easy since there are small shops in Garnant under five minutes’ drive away or supermarkets for bigger hauls in Ammanford (10 minutes’ drive).
The hall’s a good place for any group training and at the rear of the property, there’s a handy area with picnic benches that are kept undercover to prepare for any rainy days. Handily, these can be shuffled around the site if you so wish.
Whether it’s castles or country parks, mountains or beaches, cycles or hikes, you won’t need to pass up on any of the above from this site. The Black Mountains are to the north for outdoor activities and the coast is 40 minutes' drive away to the south. Handily, the local cycle hire is just down the road - so, hire out some wheels and make some good headway onto the local trails.
When you arrive back on site, there’s secure parking with CCTV so that your group can sleep soundly through the night and the convenience of separate gents and ladies’ toilets and showers, as well as disabled facilities, including a toilet, shower and easy access into the property.

Local attractions
Track down more walks in Gelli Aur Country Park (20 minutes' drive), where there’s a huge parkland, deer park and Vaughan mansion. If this sparks your interest in some history, Carreg Cennen Castle (15 minutes) is one of your closest castles (in a splendid spot above a limestone precipice in the national park) or there are the Grade I-listed ruins of Dinefwr Castle (25 minutes) over the river Tywi.
As for beach days and the lush walks that are all around the coast, there’s a long list of places you could visit… Llansteffan beach (50 minutes) along the estuary? The pebbly Pwll Du Beach (an hour) down a footpath on the Gower Peninsula? Little Hafan Lliedi (40 minutes). Or bigger Tenby (an hour and 10 minutes) or Saundersfoot (an hour and five minutes)?
Perhaps you’d rather have a sandy stroll on Burry Port West beach (40 minutes) or get into the thick of the action at Pembrey Country Park (50 minutes), where there’s a beach, ski slope, toboggan course or laser tag arena.
