  • Nearly-wild camping in the Wye Valley National Landscape
  • A 20-minute drive to Abaty Tyndyrn (Tintern Abbey); 15 to Symonds Yat
  • On an organic dairy farm with access to public footpaths
A limestone gorge, the river Wye and stunning destinations like the ruins of Abaty Tyndyrn (Tintern Abbey) – no wonder you’re looking at a break in the Wye Valley National Landscape. Well, launch your explorations at Troy Farm Camping… ‘Best of both worlds’ is a phrase that certainly applies at this site, where the nearly-wild pitches have stunning views on the edge of the Wye Valley and yet also stand 15 minutes’ walk away from the outskirts of Monmouth. In town, there are plenty of places to eat, drink or people-watch (or indeed, all three at the same time). If country walks are more your thing, Troy Farm Camping deserves another brownie point. It has easy access to three public footpaths heading to Penalt, Redbrook, Mitchel Troy and beyond. As for any of you who want to visit iconic Wye Valley destinations, the site is a 20-minute drive from Abaty Tyndyrn (Tintern Abbey) and 25 minutes from the Eagle's Nest lookout. About the site: the working dairy farm has 300 milking cows which you may well see grazing around the fields during your stay (that’s why it's kept dog-free). Vehicles must be left in the car park; the walk from the car park to the pitch’s ranges from around 55 to 200 metres, so you should bring a trolley if you think you'll need one. For quick trips out, a perfumery is opposite the site and there is a pottery studio a short drive away. Guided wild swimming sessions are available with a local company and can be arranged through the site.

What customers say

Peaceful, picturesque site with "wild camp" feel & useful facilities. Guests loved secure rural setting, views, walks, owner & campfires. Some found field overgrown, lumpy, buggy, with poor parking. A few noted disappointing toilets & no check-in.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked One of the best campsites I’ve been to. A wilding camping feel with a toilet and drinking water a short walk away. Easy to get to with it just being off the A40, petrol station 4 minute drive away or a 15 minute walk. Nice pitch’s some with fire pits, just don’t make the mistake of buying wood at the services, they have it there, fiver for a crate of good quality wood!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked This is a little gem , we wanted a basic campsite that we could all camp together, be able to barbecue and have a camp fire , this gave us everything we wanted , very rural , being on a farm but only half a mile from town of Monmouth so easy For supply’s , basic facility’s , water and a loo but if your a seasoned camper that’s more than enough , hosts were very helpful and on hand if any thing needed , would highly recommend this site and deffinatly stay lol again

To label this as wild camping is misleading, it’s a neglected field.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked It was easy to find and it was quiet.

Disliked The field where we were expected to camp was completely overgrown, which led to many insects being present. It was also very lumpy, and due to the length of the grass my children were unable to play any games outside.
Being unable to park next to the pitch was very inconvenient as the car parking area is a significant distance away from where our tent was pitched.
The toilets and washing up area (if it can be called that) were a disgrace.
Upon arrival there was no check-in, literally anyone could have arrived and camped. I was there for two nights and did not speak to a soul or give my name/booking details to anyone.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback. We are sorry to hear that our site did not meet your expectations, however there are a few key points to discuss. As an organic dairy farm, it is very important to us to conserve the land and encourage a myriad of wildlife in the area. This ethos extends to the campsite. As such, there are areas of the site where we have deliberately allowed the plant life to thrive in order to encourage ground nesting birds and insects. The site is not a neglected field at all but a managed piece of land designed to give people a taste of real wild camping. Whilst we accept that our site is not to everyone's taste, complaining about the presence of insects in the middle of July seems a little daft.

The entrance to our site is a very narrow 13th Century archway. To avoid any risk of damage to either the archway or peoples vehicles we opted to keep cars off site. This has an added benefit of being much safer for everyone camping as there is no risk of vehicles being driven around. We accept that, for some the lack of cars on the site and the distance from the car park to the pitch site is an inconvenience and thus it is very clearly written in our site listing so as to ensure there are no surprises on arrival

Our compost toilets are custom built and designed to be a sustainable facility, again we accept that they are not everyone's cup of tea but we have had great feedback from other campers about the low impact nature of our facilities

We have deliberately chosen not to greet guests on arrival, unless required. There are signs around our farm yard and on the site to help inform people once they have arrived but as we live on site we are not far away if anyone needs anything.

We hope your next choice of site is more to your liking as ours obviously wasn't the one for you. We wish you and your family well
