  • Riverside pub site in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Campfires allowed: just bring your own firewood
  • Direct access to the Beacons Way; Dan-yr-Ogof Caves within a mile
Welsh river and Welsh wanders: small and friendly Tafarn-Y-Garreg Campsite is a riverside site in the Brecon Beacons National Park, with direct access to the Beacons Way footpath, the 95-mile trail meandering through the park up to the highest peak in the Black Mountains, Fan-Brycheiniog, and the glacier lakes of the Beacons. And as you might wish when staying in such a walkable place, Tafarn-Y-Garreg has a cosy pub too… It's a mountain-style chalet serving a wide range of fine brews such as lagers, ales and ciders to have in front of the fire after a long day's hike. The field is shaded by trees and is a short stroll from the site amenities of a portable toilet and a shower hut (showers are free but might not be available through the winter months); flushing toilets are across the road in the pub. And as you might also wish on a site with a wild camping vibe such as this, campfires are fully encouraged, so do bring along bagfuls of marshmallows and several packs of sausages.

What customers say

A friendly, basic riverside campsite ideal for hikers. Pitches are good, many with fire pits. The pub across the road is a social hub. Facilities are basic but functional. Some felt it was pricey for amenities, and motorhome pitches were in the pub car park.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked A lovely small and quaint campsite. The surrounding areas are beautiful and great if you want to go for a hike or a peaceful walk.

Disliked Really disappointed that the pub opposite was closed, the nearest one if you were walking is about an hours walk. No access to the toilet which is appalling and no site of the owners. Bins were overflowed so it doesn’t seem very well maintained which is such a shame due to the lovely nature of the site itself.

Quite disappointed overall but made the best out of it and took in the surroundings. Definitely recommend that the owners are more tentative and perhaps some communication wouldn’t go amiss, especially with the pub closure and toilet access.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Nice location by a small river with easy access to a hiking path alongside.

Disliked Shower was broken and we weren't informed of this. Toilet paper wasn't stocked so we had to cycle over a mile and a bit down the road to nearest shop. Campsite was a little small and very full, it was hard to find a suitable pitching location. Bins weren't emptied and were overflowing

Primitive cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked Absolutely nothing, we ended up leaving.

Disliked Toilet and shower were not working. Pub wasn’t very welcoming, no food and it closed at 6 pm. It was a car park on a main road with a camping field behind it. There was a large group of young people in the field who were gearing up for a big night.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The location.

Disliked The toilet facilities , one toilet across the road for the whole campsite.
The attitude of the lady who told me the bar was shut before I even had chance to say hello.
The rowdy group of young adults who drank and partied all night resulting in me having to leave the campsite and pack up in the middle of the night .

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Cozy environment and site - not very large but a decent space. Firepits and fires welcomed. Nice landlady.

Disliked Showers not working and the toilet camp side was padlocked, this meant having to cross an A road in order to use the toilets at the pub. Loud music and partying till the early hours but not necessarily the fault of the landlady, a check after pub lockup to enforce noise rules would have helped here.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Great location, lots of good walks and sights nearby. Owners seemed very nice. 5g and 4g all around the campsite, even all the way up the mountain.

Disliked Toilet on the campsite was locked and pub was closed at night, also closing the only available toilet. Bins hadn’t been emptied in a while and were full.

Local attractions

Are you a superhero fan? Have a heroic hike up to the nearby Henrhyd Falls, the highest waterfall in south Wales and used as the cover for the Batcave in The Dark Knight Rises. (It's easy to find from here: ask the amiable Tafarn-Y-Garreg Campsite owner to point you on your way.) Slightly more gently, Tafarn-Y-Garreg has direct access to the 95 miles of the Beacons Way, running through the national park up to the mountains via woodland, moorland and farmland. It's a trail for experienced hikers and is only waymarked on the woodland stretches, so bring a compass and an Ordnance Survey map of the Brecon Beacons National Park if you want to give it a serious tackle. The 11 miles of the Dan-yr-Ogof Caves or National Showcaves Centre for Wales are under a mile away. Once named as the greatest natural wonder in Britain, the caves are now part of a big family complex with dinosaurs, a shire horse centre and farm, playgrounds and more. For a bit of fishing, head to the fly fishing of the Crai Reservoir, a wild brown trout fishery with full access to its stony banks.
