Pitch up for an escape
Nature
Open-air gong sound bath in the field
Cut after the last crop of 2020

  • Basic pick-your-own-pitch site with an osteopathy and wellness centre
  • Five minutes’ drive from Porthcawl and 10 from Rest Bay beach
  • Walks from the site lead to Sker beach via Kenfig Nature Reserve
A back to basics site with a bit of a twist – that’s Holistic Concepts down to a tee. This simple spot is in North Cornelly near the south Wales coast and minutes away on foot from the bliss-inducing beauty treatments and wellness sessions at the on-site Holistic Concepts Therapies. Other than that, it’s a pick-your-own-pitch sort of place for a trip with a wild camping vibe. Your modus operandi when here is to make the most of the pretty scenery in the local area. Wander along public footpaths leading directly to sandy Sker beach via Kenfig Pool, set in a national nature reserve dotted with sand dunes (around an hour). Or drive to the manicured Margam Country Park and mosey around the towering castle (15 minutes). Easily accessible cycling paths are also available in all directions and the lush green grass on site is fab for flopping down and resting after a ride. Pedal or potter to the nearest town, Porthcawl, a friendly seaside settlement with plenty of restaurants, pubs and cafés (five minutes by car or an hour on foot). The best beach here is the kitesurfers’ fave Rest Bay, while further around the coast on a scenic drive are the easy-on-the-eye Ogmore-by-Sea (15 minutes) and Southerndown (20 minutes). You might also like to join in with activities like yoga or gong sound baths, which may be available (check in advance if interested).

What customers say

This campsite is simple, affordable, and spacious with nice views and wildlife. Guests rave about the super clean facilities (especially showers!) and the very friendly, helpful host. Great location near Bristol & Tesco, close to Porthcawl beach and Kenfig nature reserve. Some traffic noise from the M4 noted, a few wanted more toilets for big groups, but most found it relaxing & well-kept.

Liked Well mown field with plenty of space. Clean toilet and shower onsite.

Disliked Permanent motorway noise from the M4 flyover nearby.
Noisy neighbours that don’t follow the quiet time rules (site owner did sort it out though)

Primitive grass trailer tent or tent campsite

Liked Laid back campsite, easy to find. Had a yoga session which was excellent, my first time. Nice walk to the beach which was quite deserted and lovely dunes. Underrated part of Wales.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Host was really friendly
Camping area was nice

Disliked Was quite noisy from the motorway
The facilities were nice but I dont think 1 shower and 1 toilet would be enough if there were more than 10 campsite set up.

Primitive grass trailer tent or tent campsite

Liked Easy access to Bristol. Can pitch anywhere. Very affordable. Simple and uncomplicated site which is my preference.

Disliked Traffic noise. Only 1 toilet. Only 1 shower. Stand pipe for water hidden at side of toilet amongst over grown plants etc....and when uaing can see person using the toilet. Could fix an extention to this for better access. One extra toilet would be good or install compost loo. Would be good to old school soap or more environmentally friendly liquid soap as doesnt fit with concept of being holistic.

Local attractions

Head to the coast around Southerndown (15 minutes’ drive) for cliffside walks past the overgrown gardens of the old Dunraven Estate. Fancy a bit of a beach session? A top tip is to take a look at the tides online to figure out when there’ll be sand to sit on. For aquatic activities inland rather than by the sea, navigate your way towards Neath for ‘Waterfall Country’ (half an hour), a cracking section of the southern Brecon Beacons National Park with a satisfying circular walking trail. Gentler strolls more your thing? Add dawdles around the duck pond at Margam Country Park (15 minutes) to the agenda; this landscaped space is also full of playgrounds and a Go Ape treetop adventure centre for active types. And if all that sounds way too energetic? Rifle the racks at the discounted boutiques in the Designer Outlet Bridgend (10 minutes), home to 90 stores with some bargains to be had. It’s also got a cinema for catching the latest blockbuster and plenty of chain restaurants. More shopping and leisure options are in the seaside city of Swansea, half an hour’s drive from the park.
