  • Small family-run site opposite Pen-Y-Fan Country Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Sirhowy Valley Walk; 25 minutes to the Big Pit
  • Play field on site; 10 minutes' drive from Blackwood town centre
In the South Wales Valleys, things like castles, country parks, coal mines (and of course, valleys) are never too far off. Among those splendid sloping landscapes is Fferm Gelli Camping, a family-run and Welsh-themed micro site fab for families looking for a quiet break. This small site is part of a Welsh farm with horses, chickens, goats and a sheep. The owners live on site and they’re fans of dogs, which is why your four-legged friend is also welcome to come and stay. With a seating area, user-friendly wet room and a children’s play field, families and dog owners should feel right at home. Equipment hire is also available at the site for things like tents, firepits and airbeds. Outside of the site, though, things are just as splendid… a few minutes' walk will get you to the local Pen-Y-Fan Pond, a green space that hosts activities such as trout fishing, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. Blackwood town centre is just 10 minutes’ drive away for supermarkets, a cinema, leisure centre, takeaways and a golf course. If you'd also like to try horse riding, there’s an equestrian centre 10 minutes’ drive away. Of course, this location is within reach of many more cool locations, including multiple castles within 25 to 45 minutes’ drive of the site. There are lots of mountain biking trails around too, such as Tirpentwys Mountain Bike Trails 15 minutes’ drive away. Cardiff, the Welsh capital, is 45 minutes’ drive to the south and the Brecon Beacons National Park is 10 miles to the north for all things outdoorsy.

What customers say

A small, secure, and friendly campsite, great for families with farm animals and play areas. Clean facilities, lovely views, and peaceful vibe are highlights. Some mention small pitches, occasional toilet paper shortages, or noise, but staff are helpful and animal encounters are a hit. Many want to come back.

Liked Nice spacious pitch nice views lovely animals
Good washing facilities and really friendly staff

Disliked It was all adequate apart from the day we left another camper mentioned the camp WiFi which I knew nothing about.
Maybe when arriving it could be mentioned.
Also other campers had a bbq and emptied it into the fire pit.
Was not extinguished so still lots of smoke from the coals. So for safety ended up getting a bucket full of water and dousing it .
This should be communicated if campers are having bbqs and using the fire pit. That the bbq needs fully extinguishing first. You cannot be to careful with carbon monoxide.

Liked The owners were very welcoming and accommodating.
The electric pitches are on the same field as the toilets and showers which were cleaned daily.
Pizza’s on a Friday are 10/10.
Our electric tripped during our stay and we had help pretty much straightaway.
It’s a lovely novelty to camp at a site that is also a farm - there are cats, llamas, ducks and chickens (and a cockerel), goats, sheep, cows (two different types) and ponies.
The pitches were plenty big enough for our large tunnel tent and the campsite was cosy.
The non electric field is a little bigger than the electric field but our pitch size wasn’t an issue.
The campsite is pretty central - It’s 10 mins to Caerphilly in one direction and 10 mins to Abertillery in the other.
We are a bilingual family and it was lush to see translations on every sign.
Although there are animals to see we thought a little outdoor play area may make the site a bit more child friendly however lack of one encouraged us to get stuck into the camp life which we also really enjoyed.

Disliked If we were being picky, our pitch had a hole in the middle of it (we had no choice but to pitch over it), the hot water to wash dishes was intermittent and mostly lukewarm and there were some rocks on the ground that we had to reposition our pegs around.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked A lovely little site. I was in a motorhome for just one night and didn't use any facilities or meet the owners so can't comment on them, but everything seemed tidy and well maintained. Lovely to have a highland cow and goats so close to the camping field.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Spacious pitches. Toilets and showers close to pitches. Cafe on site. Parking off the camping field (no slamming of car doors at all hours!). Camp fires allowed. Loved the grey cat that came into my tent and went to sleep!

Disliked Screaming kids at 6am!! Not one of the grown ups told them to stop. Obviously not the sites fault, just bad parenting.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked Great walks from site, great ice creams and kids loved seeing the animals. New cafe outdoor seating area is great and cafe looked popular. Nice smallholding for an afternoon coffee trip. Quiet nights, so slept well. Kids were enclosed in the camp area so didn't have to worry about cars.
We liked the signage with the Welsh pronounciation. Good cheap basecamp.

Disliked Site is smaller than their pictures suggest (approx 12 small plots), my husband and I felt mislead by some pictures. We would usually have camped a bit more picturesque/rural and would have paid more for that had we realised. Staff were not particularly warm and welcoming. Camping field could have benefitted from a roller and pitches were close together, but on this occasion it didn't matter as there were not many of us there. This was lucky as I had checked our large air tent would fit and they said yes, but I asked to move on arrival as the nominated pitch would have been a squash right next to one of the only other tents.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Small and not overall commercial site. Very convenient for visiting our family
Easy to book
Friendly owner
Plenty of animals to look at.
On site cafe - looked good although we did not get to eat there.
Good location

Disliked Grass was a bit long. Not too much of an issue for us as in a campervan
Lock on one toilet is broken - the owners probably don’t know - didn’t see them a second time to let them know.
Again something owners probably not aware of - people running engine in carpark while they cook using boot of car - annoying engine noise when farm was so peaceful.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Not far from Abertillery! Toilet was clean

Disliked Difficut access as gate was blocked by cars. Field was very small, grass had docks and hadn't been cut. The ground had been churned up by grazing livestock. There was rubbish on our pitch, which we had to pick up. Toilets and showers were primitive, and only 1 toilet was available while we were there.
The site was very over priced, compared with others, at £30 a night.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked A space in the corner of a field amongst tents.

It was a laid back environment. Lady in shop was polite.

Disliked It may not suit everyone due to a noisy environment. They was a party in the barn next door with loud music till at least 10pm. Other campers were playing music.

It's a busy place as next door is a public cafe and farm

The showers weren't clean, however hot unlimited water and heater in there.

Washing up facilities next the ducks, questionable location and not a clean area.

Local attractions

A castle visit is a must, but which will it be? Caerphilly Castle (25 minutes’ drive) is a medieval castle, Castell Coch (35 minutes) is from the 19th century and Cardiff Castle (45 minutes) has over 2000 years of history for you to uncover. With the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park around 20 minutes’ drive to the north, mountain hikes are always an option. Otherwise, the Sirhowy Valley Walk (around 15 minutes) is certainly spectacular. The long-distance hike has miles of walking over farms, woodlands and mountain ridges in the Valleys landscapes, beginning or ending in Newport. You may want to learn a little about the history of Welsh mining while you’re around these parts. If so, the Big Pit National Coal Museum (25 minutes) runs tours around a Welsh coal mine. Perhaps a visit to a cider farm too? Hallets Cider (15 minutes) runs cider tasting tours and food pairing sessions.
