Dare Valley Country Park: The lake at Dare

General

  • A scenic 500-acre site on an old colliery at the Brecon Beacons’ edge
  • A five-minute drive to Aberdare and 15 minutes to Penderyn Distillery
  • Playgrounds and cafeteria on site; waterfall walks within 30 minutes

If you’re wanting a countryside Welsh holiday close to southern Wales’ mightiest mountain range, settle in for a few days or more at Dare Valley Country Park: this site in Mid Glamorgan sits on top of an old colliery a five-minute drive from the old mining town of Aberdare on the outskirts of the Brecon Beacons.

The whopping 500 acres of space at the park means wanders (among lush valley views) are par for the course, with trails leading off into the countryside straight from the site too. But you might be hard-pressed luring kids away from the two playgrounds (the biggest has a sandpit, slides and swings) or partners from a cafeteria that opens daily for freshly prepped breakfast, lunch and snacks...

If they’re really not keen to come away from this scenic place, bribe them with the mountain biking trails at BikePark Wales, about 20 minutes away. For grownups, golf at a parkland course with manicured meadow lawns and mature oaks is less than a 10-minute drive from the site.

And if you really need to bring out the big guns (for the big folk, that is)? There’s always the lure of a tour and tasting session at Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (within 15 minutes)… This whisky making centre’s in the southern part of the Brecon Beacons; travelling a touch further (half an hour in all from the site) leads right into the middle of the national park for ambles around green hills.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

We loved everything here. Could not find any fault or anything to dislike about Dare Valley Country Park's facilities, and we loved it so much that we extended three or four times.

    ACCESS ON ARRIVAL

Perhaps access could be slightly easier, i.e. for those who don't know it or the area, make the main entrances easier to spot in the rain, wind, and darkness. Clearer sign to say that we're in the right place would help, then maybe an electronic keypad instead of the 'bike lock style' lock for those who don't have the manual dexterity to turn the numbers in the dark and cold.

If I had been alone. I would never have believed that was the site entrance as it looked more residential and I wouldn't have dared enter. :) I'd probably still be hunting for it now!

But once inside, it's a delight so you just need to do your research first.

    GREETING AND SERVICE

Staff; impeccable, second to none, and special thanks to the wonderful Valda who is super helpful and knows everything you could want to find out. Valda was just one of those people you instantly love; she enjoys her job, goes out of her way to help and wants to make you feel good about being there.

    AMENITIES

Again, second to none. We have not yet found a touring site that meets our needs as much as Dare Valley managed to. Yes, perhaps we would have liked our own water hookup but it was local so we just bought a hose extension and that was sorted. But other than that, what doesn't this site offer?

We had a hardstanding with grass pitch for our Rollerteam Autoroller 746 and were able to put up a large awning with a windbreak to exercise our Persian cats in. We were hooked up to power.

The amenities block is beautiful! You would never get a better shower and wash than here. Lovely clean floors and cubicles, nice warm room with a hygienic floor surface, several shower cubicles, many toilets (spotless), huge shower cubicle space with big solid doors to keep the heat in, and the showers were perfect.

The showers are nice and hot and the lights and water do not act on a timer unlike at some other places, so you do not get thrust into the dark every so often or find the water cut off before you washed off the soap! It was also easy to keep my clothes dry by hanging my clothes at the end of the enclosure.

Fantastic for me as I had hair extensions was the hotel-style hairdryer that was fabulous, very efficient and lovely to use. Did a better job than my home dryer.

This small touch--and the fact the wash block is nice and warm--makes you feel the site is really trying to look after you rather than worrying about getting you back out of the shower block as soon as possible! Here, you can pamper your hair or fae a little because it's very comfortable and clean. I'd liken the shower and toilet block to those at a high-end gym.

The amenities building also offers a washing-up area, washer and dryer and Elsan point. I may have missed some things off the list as I was working all the time in my van but what I saw was wonderful.

Best park we visited so far!

Oh, and it was really quiet and peaceful too.

Well done to all the staff at Dare Valley Country Park.

Loved our time at Dare valley country park. We only stayed overnight, but we really enjoyed it. Didn’t get to take full advantage of all facilities as our van was playing up and had to have recovery to sort it out for us. My extended family visit quite regularly, we intend to hopefully visit again soon. Loved the coffee shop/restaurant very nice building and lovely food. Toilet & shower facilities were very clean and modern. Looking forward to our next visit.

Lovely well kept site with immaculate toilet/shower facilities.

    Disliked:

Access through the housing estate prior to reaching the park could be difficult if you have a caravan or are towing something behind your motorhome, especially at school time (there is a school very close to the entrance).

*This is not a criticism of the site in any way as there are signs clearly stating do not wash your dog in the showers - however, during our stay someone was seen ignorantly disregarding this and taking their dog in to do precisely that*

What I liked was this was a very clean, tidy and efficient campsite surrounded by beautiful hills/scenery. The shower/toilet block was immaculate and kept clean which I always think is a sign of a well run site.
It was spacious and so much to do whether it be walking or cycling. We went out for the day to the Four Falls Waterfalls area where there are several walks and the climbs down to the falls and getting back up was quite challenging albeit worth every amount of effort.
Wales always impresses me with the hills and mountains and go to the right spot and it will take your breath away.
    Thanks for having me!!

Local attractions

Head about half an hour west of the site into the Brecon Beacons and get to the national park’s waterfall country, home to falls with nicely tongue-tripping names like Sgwd Gwladys (30 minutes’ drive) and Sgwd Yr Eira (35 minutes). The former’s just the place for wild swimming in a deep plunge pool surrounded by woodland...

Drier times are to be had at stately piles about 35 minutes south of the park, including Caerphilly Castle with its massive moat and towers or smaller Castell Coch reconstructed in a fairytale style in the Victorian era by well-known architect William Burgess.

Cardiff (40 minutes away) also has its own castle with renovations by Burgess – head to this swish city for cool concerts and sports events at the Principality Stadium or just check out the boutiques in the Victorian shopping arcades.

For another architecturally intriguing manor home from a different era, the Tudor-style Tredegar House is 45 minutes away from the park.
