  • Adults-only shepherd's hut in a peaceful North Wales valley
  • A mile and a half from Chirk; half an hour's drive from Chester
  • Fully-furnished glamping accommodation in a spacious private field
Keep holidays on the cosy side with this smart shepherd's hut just outside Chirk. With a sizeable wooden terrace and seating area that looks out over a huge grassy field, Kingfisher Escapes is the kind of place geared towards guests looking to totally switch off for a spell. The gorgeous river Ceiriog (which also serves as the border between England and Wales) runs along the easternmost side of this north Wales site, making the area a hub for wildlife. (You might, with a bit of luck, even spot a quick glimpse of the site's brilliant blue namesake bird.) Inside, the self-contained hut has a comfy double bed and a fully-equipped kitchen with a proper oven as well as a small hob, a kettle and a toaster. There's indoor and outdoor furniture, as well as a well-presented wet room with a toilet and shower. You'll be kept warm on wintery nights with an electric woodburner-style heater and can wake up to tasty croissants, jams, tea and coffee, all of which comes in a complimentary welcome pack. There's a lot to like in the local area too, including 13th-century Chirk Castle (five minutes' drive), Llangollen on the river Dee (20 minutes) and the old Roman city of Chester (30 minutes). Chirk's also got a good number of food shops, pubs and cafés to keep you fed and watered while you're in the area.

Local attractions

Once you've ticked off Chirk Viaduct (five minutes' drive) and the castle (five minutes), you might like to head up the road to Pontcysyllte's even more dramatic viaduct (10 minutes) or to stroll along the Dee and the Grand Union Canal. Travel a little further west along the A5 and you'll soon be in Llangollen (20 minutes), where there's a choice between horse-drawn boat trips, a steam-powered heritage railway and Plas Newydd Historic House and Gardens. Sporty and adventurous options locally include whitewater rafting trips starting and ending in Llangollen, off-road segwaying just outside Chirk (10 minutes), or, if you like the look of day trips to Snowdonia, Zip World Fforest in Betws-y-Coed (an hour). If your idea of entertainment definitely doesn't involve getting mucky, a smart spa 10 minutes away has a stash of soothing treatments that may appeal (particularly if you've come here as a couple). Once scrubbed up, put on your best attire and head over the border to similarly smart venues like Chester Racecourse (30 minutes) or the Storyhouse Theatre (30 minutes).
