  • Vale of Clwyd site a mile from Ruthin town centre
  • Half an hour's drive from Snowdonia and 40 minutes from the coast
  • Views of the Clwydian Range: Moel Famau within walking distance
Even a quick look at the pics gives away that Coed Derw Camping has some cracking views out over the Clwydian Range… and that in turn should give you a hint that this Denbighshire site, within the grounds of the Vale Country Club, is a fine spot for a walking holiday. It’s a particularly fine spot if you’re in the area to climb Moel Famau, the region’s highest peak. This popular hiking area is within walking distance of the park so you can tackle it without any need to consider car parking – always something of a bonus. Your boots won’t be done once you’re back down from there: have a chat with the folk on site for ideas on where else to walk locally or take a drive to Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park (about half an hour away). While you’re over there, you might like to tackle mountain bike trails, whitewater rafting or zipwires too; if that all sounds a bit much, head north to the seaside with a drive of 40 minutes or so. Got any more walking in your legs? It’s handy to know you can walk to the town of Ruthin in about 20 minutes (along a road that’s got pavement all the way) – although you could also drive in five minutes if you’re out of puff. Either way, there are plenty of places to eat and drink over there, plus takeaways and shops to pick up supplies for a barbecue back at base. Back at base, facilities include toilets, showers and wifi.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The campsite location and the views were amazing, just what we were looking for - a few beers and a decent Saturday afternoon walk in the nearby hills. We were the only ones on the campsite on the second night, as they had mistakenly accepted our booking while there was a big wedding in the Country Club. But were very good about it. It was just a little strange being the only ones walking around using the facilities and shower, while everyone else was all dressed up. But would definitely return.

Disliked The showers were a little 'communal', but being the only ones camping, this wasn't a problem for us.
The road next to the campsite was loud at times, but seemed to reduce at night.

Liked Nice clean toilets. Lovely views.

Disliked The whole site is on slope, which would make almost impossible to access when wet, the caravan pitches are not level.

Local attractions

Best way to get out for a walk? Head straight out from the site for the likes of Ruthin Gaol (half an hour on foot) or Moel Famau (an hour and 15 minutes). Once you’ve wandered locally there are heaps more fab routes in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park (half an hour’s drive) or out on the Denbighshire moors, where Llyn Brenig (half an hour) is a top spot for waterside walks, plus sailing and fishing. If you’ve got a bit of an adventurous streak, there are plenty of places to unleash that around here. If it’s moving at speed that gets your heart going, try out the mountain bike trails at One Planet Adventure (20 minutes), or scream along the ziplines at Zip World Betws-y-Coed (45 minutes). For water-based antics, head to The National White Water Centre (40 minutes), or for something subterranean, bounce on the underground trampolines at Zip World Llechwedd (an hour). Time for a breather? Rhyl (40 minutes) is a fine choice for a day at the seaside, playing on the beach and riding the miniature railway.
