An autumn day on site

  • Peaceful farm site with stunning views of the Clwydian Range
  • A 20-minute drive from Moel Famau; just under an hour from the coast
  • Well-equipped shared kitchen, plus firepits and chimineas to hire
Peaceful? Scenic? Very much so. This Denbighshire site is a place to settle down at for both, with added views out over the Clwydian Range Area of Natural Beauty. The vibe is decidedly rural at Clwydian Holidays, a relaxed and spacious site 15 minutes’ drive from Ruthin – as you might expect from a site on a family-run working farm. Days can be easily filled with walks, mountain bike outings, watersports, fishing and other such outdoorsy antics, while evenings on site are a prime time to light up a barbecue or cuddle up by a firepit or chiminea (both available to hire on site) while aiming your gaze up at the starry skies (fingers crossed for cloudless nights…) At times when it’s not barbecue weather (it’s Wales, it can happen…), retreat to the custom-built kitchen, which has been kitted out with an oven, hob, fridge, toaster and kettle, plus a dining table for indoor eats. Also on site are plenty of open space for kids to run about and play games, plus a toilet block with three showers and a wash basin area.

Camping pod

Liked There are just four pods on this site, together with space for a few tents.

The pods are fine, with a small bathroom with sink & toilet, together with another sink & kettle in the "kitchen" area.

There is a toilet & shower block, as well as a kitchen / dining area with oven & microwave. Also a large room which would be handy on wet days.

Ray & Rose are superb hosts, & responded readily to requests.

The site is superbly located, well off the beaten track, with excellent views across the Vale of Clwyd.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, & will definitely be returning.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked One of the best campsites I've ever spent a night at. Beautifully located in a remote and very quiet area, surrounded by beautiful nature and beautiful views. The campsite is not large but that's its advantage, thanks to which there are no crowds. All facilities on site, very well-equipped kitchen, stove, microwave, pots, glasses, plates, everything to prepare a meal. Toilets and showers very clean and spacious, unlimited access to water. Additional building (play room) where you can spend your time or charge your phone.

Disliked There is no WIFI, which is unfortunately the basis of functioning these days. On the other hand, if you want to cut yourself off from the world, then this will definitely be an advantage for you.

Local attractions

It’s a fair guess to assume you’ve come to this part of the world to get your fill of fresh air… so start your sojourn with a stroll in the Clwydian Range AONB, which surrounds the site, or set off for the Snowdonia National Park (half an hour away by car). Should you wish to scale Snowdon, it’ll take you an hour or so to drive to one of the starting points. More excited by the mountain biking option? Make off to Moel Famau (20 minutes’ drive), the Llandegla Forest (half an hour) or Coed y Brenin Forest Park (an hour). Llyn Brenig (35 minutes) is a fab spot for fishing, and there’s wilder water to tackle with rafting and gorge walking trips from Llangollen (half an hour). Rather just view the waters? Take a scenic trip on the Bala Lake Railway (40 minutes). If your Wales trip isn’t complete without a castle and a beach, those can be sorted with an outing to grand medieval pile Chirk Castle (40 minutes) and the sandy beach at Talacre (55 minutes). Llandudno, a bit further along the coast (an hour’s drive from the farm) is another fab spot for a beach day – ride the cable car up to the top of the Great Orme headland, then paddle in the sea or bimble around Bodnant Gardens, a couple of miles outside town.
