The Llama Farm: Bell Tent under Oak in the meadow

General

  • Small family-friendly working farm site in the Dee Valley
  • Half an hour from Llyn Tegid and 45 minutes from Betws-y-Coed
  • Firepits available for hire; breakfast available on weekend mornings

Walking, cycling, running and swimming… outdoor enthusiasts or simply anyone looking for a relaxing break may set up a sturdy base at The Llama Farm, a small, family-friendly site in the Dee Valley in North Wales. Here, you’ll be planting down on a working farm on the banks of the river Dee in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where each pitch has just under an acre of land and an unused part of a heritage railway line runs along the bottom of the meadow.

The cosy facilities here include toilets and a dishwashing area. You may want to channel good vibes with a firepit, available for hire at a small cost per night. The site also offers phone and power bank charging points so you it's easy to plot out your route.

You’ll be able to power up with a breakfast made from ingredients sourced from the farm on weekends, as this is available upon request on Saturdays and Sundays. On Saturday evenings, you may also get your mitts on Welsh lamb loaded fries, to be booked on arrival.

As this is a working farm, there may be times where the site takes a little longer to respond, so they ask for patience while they deal with your needs. The farm’s animals like their own space and may be wary of strangers coming to say hello, so guests are asked to keep to designated paths and fields.

Loved everything about this place! Margo and her wonderful family could not be more welcoming. Enormous spacious field, super clean toilets and only 8 other tents in the field... (with a gorgeous river running by!...bliss).

We just hope you do it again next year as we will be back.

Enjoyed the peace and quietness. As the stream runs alongside the perimeter of the site, it was good to paddle in with the kids on a hot day.

    Disliked:

No hot running water or hot showers available, only 2 eco-tents with water at ambient (cool) temperature. Hard to feel clean if you were to stay for longer than a couple of days.

Great location, a private field just off the road (but not in sight of it) and nestled in the valley with beautiful hills and forests all around. The owners are lovely and sell eggs from their own chickens as well as a few other bits and bobs produced on the farm. We look forward to coming back next year if the opportunity arrises

Beautiful location, and so much space! Our nearest neighbours were about 50m away! Could have been the only people on the site once it went dark. Great fire pit with lots of wood provided, hired from the site. Facilities are basic but kept clean and the owners are very friendly and accommodating. Only stayed a night, but loved it. Driving past the crowded campsites near Llangollen on the way home demonstrated just what a special little site this is! The Grouse in Carrog had a lovely terrace overlooking the river, but book ahead for a table. Thanks, Llama Farmers!

Brilliant pop-up site with friendly owners in a beautiful location08/25/2021

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in the bell tent a couple of weeks ago as part of our wedding anniversary trip around Wales.
On arrival, we were greeted by the friendly owners who showed us where the facilities were before showing us to the bell tent.

The bell tent was lovely! We're seasoned campers and it made such a pleasant change to arrive to a fully erected tent with a proper bed that was fully made up. There were a couple of wooden boxes to store things in and on along with a couple of cups, some hand sanitiser and a little vase of flowers which was a lovely touch. Outside there was a sun/wind canopy, a bistro set and some solar powered string lights.

On the second evening, we hired a fire pit and a bbq which came with all the necessary logs/charcoal and firelighters which was brought over to us. You can also buy some home-produced meat to cook on the bbq. We booked these on arrival but if you really, really want one I recommend calling in advance of your stay to reserve one as they were pretty popular.

On Saturday morning we both had a cooked breakfast. These can be booked the night before on weekends only. My husband is veggie and allergic to eggs so they custom made his which was a lovely touch.

This is a really quiet pop-up campsite on a fully working farm and this is the first year that they have opened. As such the facilities are limited but perfectly adequate for a short stay. There are 3 large portaloos that are better than your average. They always had toilet roll and hand sanitiser. The flush is a foot pump variety which I prefer. There is also a sink for washing dishes which had handwash available and a couple of solar-powered showers if you really did need one. There is a maximum of 10 tents on-site so you always have plenty of space around you.

Walk to the end of the lane out of the campsite and turn right to find The Grouse Inn which has a terrace with spectacular views over the river. Takes about 5 to 10 minutes to walk. They serve good food and decent ale and it is a good idea to book in advance.

The owners are absolutely lovely and go out of their way to make your stay welcome as possible. They are always happy to chat and they even gave us a couple of freshly cut corn cobs to cook on the bbq as my husband is veggie. The campsite is in a lovely location with beautiful views and is a great base for exploring the area. I didn't want to go home and really hope that they re-open again next year.

I wholeheartedly recommend this campsite for anyone looking for a back-to-basics camping trip in a wonderful location.

Thank you all for making the end of our trip very special and we hope to see you again in the future. Donna and Pete.
