  • Cosy self-catering lodge in peaceful surroundings in North Wales
  • Nestled on a wooded hillside overlooking the magnificent Dee Valley
  • Family-run business, village location, within easy reach of Snowdonia
Wanting to hunker down in a Welsh valley with extraordinary views? Dee Valley Stays will give you the views (woodland, sunsets, starry skies on clear nights) in spades, as well as no-frills convenience in a comfy hillside lodge. All of that and it’s only just five minutes’ drive from the A5, so it’s easy to reach too. Overlooking the Dee Valley near Corwen in Denbighshire, this dog-friendly property is on a smallholding and hits the spot for couples and small families looking for a rural hideaway. Bed linen and towels come as part of the deal, and a private shower room is just across the gravel driveway. Everything is there in the well-equipped kitchenette, from a sink and fridge to microwave and hobs, for you to produce simple meals – the village of Cywnwyd is a few minutes’ stroll away for basics shopping (plus a pub if you want to dodge the cooking). After a busy day out and about, the evening is a time for relaxing on the shared decking area with a glass of wine, watching as the sun sets across the valley… and waiting for the resident owls to start their nightly chorus. The owners of Dee Valley Stays live on-site with their two kids and dogs, a goat, a handful of geese and ducks, and a flock of rescue hens (the latter provide you with fresh eggs every day). If you would like to meet the menagerie, please let them know and they’ll organise it for you.

Redwood Lodge microlodge

Liked: Peaceful location, clean accommodation and private bathroom. Lots of lovely touches throughout. Friendly hosts.

Disliked: We would have benefited from sturdier/blackout blinds for getting young children to sleep…but appreciate we stayed over the longest day of the year! Only dropped a wifi star as it sometimes dropped out.

Poplar Lodge microlodge

Liked: I liked how we were away from the tourism and felt it was our place for the week. very good attention to detail. really nice to have a few of the essentials in the kitchen.

Disliked: we were very lucky with the weather. Had it been wet i think we would of had a problem drying any hiking equipment. The use of the shelter that backed onto us would solve this issue maybe converting it into a drying room. The towel warmer was insufficient to heat the shower/toilet room and the lack of ventilation caused the extractor fan to struggle withdrawing any steam.

From the manager: Hi Richard, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. We're really glad you enjoyed your stay – you definitely were lucky with the weather! Thanks for the suggestion of setting up a drying room – I'll look into this as it would definitely be a good addition :)

Local attractions

Walkers and cyclists, you find yourselves in the Clwydian Range and the Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so there are masses of outdoor opportunities right from the doorstep – and nature lovers, keep your eyes peeled for otters and water voles on your rambles. On the edge of Snowdonia National Park, Lake Bala (20 minutes’ drive) has scenic waterside walks plus canyoning and kayaking at the National White Water Rafting Centre (25 minutes). Deeper into the park, Betws-y-Coed (35 minutes) is the hub of long-distance mountain hikes and bike rides, or shorter, family-friendly jaunts to waterfalls. Buzzy Llangollen (20 minutes) has pretty walks along the Victoria Promenade overlooking the River Dee, as well as canal trips over the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (half an hour) to Horseshoe Falls (20 minutes). Golf and fishing are both available in town, and if you’re after more daredevil pursuits, try white-water rafting down the river. Love your history? Prehistoric sites abound locally, including the remnants of an Iron Age hill fort at Caer Drewyn and the megalithic stone circle of Moel Tŷ Uchaf (both 10 minutes). From each spot, you have amazing hill views.
