  • Well-maintained family-run north Wales pub site by the river Alwen
  • In Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr; edge of Snowdonia 15 minutes' drive
  • Alpaca walks and feeding on site; river fishing permitted
Originally a drovers' inn, The Crown Inn is a handsome Grade II-listed pub sitting in a peaceful position by the river Alwen in the pretty North Wales village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Lying just behind the pub and skirted by ancient woodland, the pub's laidback camping area has easy access to forest trails, fishing on the riverbank and drinks in the bar. Access to The Crown Inn and Campsite is via a ford crossing that crosses the river – an exciting and intrepid journey that's sure to hold particular appeal for younger guests. A short wander away, there's a small waterfall that cascades down from the top of the woods into the river below – keep an eye out for fairies around here, as they're known to hang around in the area by the wooden bridge… Facilities here consist of well-maintained compost toilets and a washing-up area on site. There's access to The Crown Inn's bar and restaurant, which serve up good food and drinks throughout the week. Looking for things to do during your down-time? Relax by the riverbank, try a spot of catch-and-return fishing in the Alwen or fix yourself a firepit. You can also book some time at the site's private alpaca paddock to feed The Crown Inn's friendly boys, or sign up to an alpaca walk through the surrounding countryside with a woolly companion by your side.

Meadow primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely to have animals thst you can feed. Owners and staff are lovely.

Disliked Tightt searing setup in pub for meal. Placed us next to a birthday party and a enormous dog in a very small area.

No water in meadows field , or basic portaloo facilities, you have to go over the river for the toilet! I knew the situation from description, but in reality it was pain with a child. If I owned the place just invest in a portaloo

We absolutely loved our stay – the community feel from the owners…

Alpaca Area - Willow bell tent (two person)

Liked We absolutely loved our stay – the community feel from the owners was really warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere around the site was just perfect. Staying with the alpacas in the bell tent was so much fun and made the experience really special.

There was loads to do right on site, so we were able to fully enjoy our time without needing to go far. The food was great too – really tasty and just what we needed after a day of exploring and relaxing.

The listing clearly set expectations – we knew there were no showers and that we’d need to walk to the car, but honestly, the short walk across the river to collect our things just added to the charm.

Disliked Absolutely nothing to complain about! We’re really excited to book again and have recommended to family and friends.

Clean facilities, never used a compost toilet before, which was fun.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite (two person, small)

Liked The pub was cosy and the staff welcoming. The camp site had great facilities and location. It was very peaceful and pleasant with the sound of the river flowing.

Disliked The steps down to the camp site were inconvenient although there is a ford that can be crossed in car or by foot if wearing waterproof footwear.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite (two person, small)

Liked We had the most amazing time here! The highlight for me was the hospitality of the place, with the kindest hosts who consistently went out of their way to help us and make us feel welcomed - guiding us around the local area when we needed help, providing lovely chats at the pub and during the alpaca walks. The site itself was beautiful, with a lovely river to swim in, a heaven of green trees and meadow to wake up in, and many gorgeous accessible walks nearby. The alpacas were definitely a highlight and our walk with them was both informative and adorable. The pub food was also delicious, and there was a nice little pool table too. Would highly highly recommend to anyone and everyone :)

A lovely place to stay.

Alpaca Area - Willow bell tent (two person)

Liked Omg what a gem of a place,Rich and Caroline were the bestest hosts ever, we stayed in the willow tent and it was soooh comfy and clean with the added bonus of the alpacas aka the boys 😍 (charlie was my fave, sorry to the other 3 lol). The food was amazing, the river was lovely to wake up to,the whole area was such a serene peace of mind to stay at. Everything you could wish for a great camping experience is here, even though there are no showers when you camp you are getting to experience mother nature at her fullest, that we should do now and then.
Overall my hubby and I and an amazing time and will 100% be coming back again, we loved this place ❤️ ♥️ 💕

Meadow primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We absolutely loved our stay here. Such a friendly welcome which was lovely after a long journey.
We booked the meadow pitch which meant wading across the ford to reach the composting loo which we had great fun doing ( could have walked around by the bridge but where's the fun in that?). It's a lovely, peaceful location and it was heaven to sit there by a campfire listening to all the sounds of the night.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (family, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Everything about the Crown Inn was fantastic. Amazing scenery, wonderful hosts. We had a great pitch right next to the river, there is something amazing about waking up with just bird song and a bubbling river. Rich was a great host and so friendly and helpful. Will definitely be stopping there again and have already recommended to a couple weet at the next site we stayed at. Cute alpaca's. Cannot fault anything. Thank you for a wonderful stay

Disliked There is nothing to dislike at all at this site

Local attractions

There's plenty to do hereabouts, whether you're inclined to go off gallivanting through the hills of Snowdonia National Park (from 15 minutes' drive), boating on Bala lake (20 minutes) or heading out to see cool castles like the one at Conwy (45 minutes). The village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr is in a central location in North Wales, so both the north and west coasts of the country are within an hour's drive too. If you've got kids or teens to keep entertained, popular options to keep them busy include Go Below Underground Adventures (20 minutes), a caving outfit based in Betws-y-Coed, the woodland rides and activities at Zip World Fforest (25 minutes) or taking a trip to see the many species of animals and birds at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (50 minutes). For something silent and serene instead, take a soothing stroll around the grounds of Clocaenog Forest (five minutes; free parking available at Bod Petryal car park), keep your eyes and ears peeled for osprey at Llyn Brenig (15 minutes) or appreciate the horticultural offerings on display at Caerau Gardens (25 minutes).
