  • Well-maintained family-run north Wales pub site by the river Alwen
  • In Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr; edge of Snowdonia 15 minutes' drive
  • Alpaca walks and feeding on site; river fishing permitted
Originally a drovers' inn, The Crown Inn is a handsome Grade II-listed pub sitting in a peaceful position by the river Alwen in the pretty North Wales village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Lying just behind the pub and skirted by ancient woodland, the pub's laidback camping area has easy access to forest trails, fishing on the riverbank and drinks in the bar. Access to The Crown Inn and Campsite is via a ford crossing that crosses the river – an exciting and intrepid journey that's sure to hold particular appeal for younger guests. A short wander away, there's a small waterfall that cascades down from the top of the woods into the river below – keep an eye out for fairies around here, as they're known to hang around in the area by the wooden bridge… Facilities here consist of well-maintained compost toilets and a washing-up area on site. There's access to The Crown Inn's bar and restaurant, which serve up good food and drinks throughout the week. Looking for things to do during your down-time? Relax by the riverbank, try a spot of catch-and-return fishing in the Alwen or fix yourself a firepit. You can also book some time at the site's private alpaca paddock to feed The Crown Inn's friendly boys, or sign up to an alpaca walk through the surrounding countryside with a woolly companion by your side.

What customers say

This scenic riverside campground is lauded for its friendly owners and staff. Guests loved the peaceful vibe, animal encounters, and river fun. The on-site pub is a hit for good food/drinks. Facilities are usually clean, though some noted a lack of showers for longer stays. Its natural beauty and family-friendly setting make it a top pick.

Liked We loved everything. The location is stunning. We stayed in the alpaca paddock which was really special and quiet. The pub is a gorgeous place for a drink and the staff are all really friendly.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (family, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Perfect little camp site, nice big pitches, friendly owners, no music allowed so perfect for family’s and people trying to get away from the world. The kids absolutely loved the river and being able to have a swim. Thought the no electric situation would be difficult with kids but the owners are more than accommodating and offered plenty solutions. We will definitely be back!

Disliked Nothing to dislike. Did exactly what was advertised.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (family, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Just spent 2 lovely nights at this wonderful campsite with my 2 children. We did the Alpaca walk and feed which my kids loved. Molly our guide was fab and very informative. Molly also gave us advice on the local area and recommended Lake Bala which was only 25 mins away. It’s stunning and offers plenty of water sports.
The campsite is located on the river and great for the kids to play in as it’s not deep. It was fun driving across the ford to get to the tent pitch. There are 2 covered compost toilets and a washing area to wash your equipment or get water.
We were all gutted to leave as we had such a great time. We will definitely be back. Thank you. Richard.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (family, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Absolutely beautiful site, starts with a drive through the river to get onto your pitch. Lovely views pitched next to the river. Alpacas, sheep and chickens to feed on site, the pub a d staff are lovely.

Disliked Was quite busy and noisy on the riverside camp field, can imagine is quite peaceful once the kids are back in school.
I have a problem with compost toilets, but when there are only 2 for the amount of people using them first thing on the mornings, it's not the nicest. But the staff do try to clean them every hr. A shower would be nice, even if it was a solar power outdoor shower.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (family, maximum 6 metres)

Liked I loved being by the idyllic river. It felt safely enclosed due to the woods rising on the other side of the pitch. There is a beautiful bridge and the pub on the corner is lovely. There is attention to the environment, with compost loos (kept v clean) and only kiln dried wood allowed. Fording the river in the camper was exciting and fun for me and my family. The alpacas are cute and friendly and another treat. Just over the river is a really old church that is open too. We had afriendly welcome and just felt delighted to be there. Furthermore, it is close to many special day trips (with a vehicle), like Conwy falls, where we saw salmon leaping! Great trip with a safe and beautiful base.

Local attractions

There's plenty to do hereabouts, whether you're inclined to go off gallivanting through the hills of Snowdonia National Park (from 15 minutes' drive), boating on Bala lake (20 minutes) or heading out to see cool castles like the one at Conwy (45 minutes). The village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr is in a central location in North Wales, so both the north and west coasts of the country are within an hour's drive too. If you've got kids or teens to keep entertained, popular options to keep them busy include Go Below Underground Adventures (20 minutes), a caving outfit based in Betws-y-Coed, the woodland rides and activities at Zip World Fforest (25 minutes) or taking a trip to see the many species of animals and birds at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (50 minutes). For something silent and serene instead, take a soothing stroll around the grounds of Clocaenog Forest (five minutes; free parking available at Bod Petryal car park), keep your eyes and ears peeled for osprey at Llyn Brenig (15 minutes) or appreciate the horticultural offerings on display at Caerau Gardens (25 minutes).
