  • Glamping with a wild vibe on a sheep farm near Conwy in North Wales
  • A 35-minute drive to Snowdonia National Park; 10 minutes to Colwyn Bay
  • Dog-friendly site; beach, pub and shopping within 10 minutes’ drive
The glamping accommodation at Pen Cefn Farm Holiday is set on a 25-acre traditional sheep farm near Conwy in North Wales. Peaceful and secluded, it is surprisingly only 10 minutes’ drive from the A55 North Wales Expressway, making it fast and easy to access from western England, and a useful base for exploring Snowdonia National Park. The almost-wild-camping vibe here means that there is no electricity in site, so pack a torch for night-time forays to the loo – and there is a shower block with wash basin. Guests are allowed to bring their dogs on holiday too, but please bring bedding and towels. Other things you might like to pack include a disposable barbecue (the site owner can supply wood for a fee) and some extra layers of clothing for any chillier moments. You can pick up last-minute essentials from the handy store and butchers in Betws-yn-Rhos village (five minutes’ drive) , where there’s also a pub if you feel like a change of scenery. If you feel like getting active, there’s a golf course in the village, and on warm days, the beach at Colwyn Bay (10 minutes) calls you for dips in the Irish Sea.

Local attractions

Nip across the Menai Bridge to the Isle of Anglesey (half an hour’s drive) for the day, to discover the sandy swimming beach at Red Wharf Bay (50 minutes) and have a look around the formal plantings at Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens (both 40 minutes). Back on the mainland, tour Conwy Castle (20 minutes) or park up the car in Llandudno (20 minutes) and hike around the Great Orme, stopping off to admire the spectacular sea views. Other scenic walks include a romp up to Aber Falls near Bangor (40 minutes) or to the glacial lake of Llyn Padarn from Llanberis (45 minutes). To up the activity factor somewhat, why not scare yourselves silly in the high-speed wires at Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (45 minutes), or the toboggan ride at Zip World Fforest (half an hour)? And if you’re travelling with younger kids, then a day of gentle rollercoaster rides and magic shows at Greenwood Park Caernarfon, or pottering around the butterfly house at Pili Palas Nature World (both 40 minutes) may be right up your street.
