  • Friendly site on a farm in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Just over a mile's walk to pubs in Talybont-on-Usk
  • Meet the farm animals on site; bike hire available
Bed down in the Brecon Beacons National Park – and have yourself a slice of proper Powys farm life while you’re at it too. Coity Bach is a welcoming and friendly rural site on a farm just over a mile from the pretty little village of Talybont-on-Usk. Budding farmhands can get stuck into various tasks on site, helping out with the goats and horses, while those in search of more relaxing times can simply settle down in a serene setting for idle hours on site. Either way, it’s worth staying awake until after dark if you can: there’s some great stargazing to be done here, and barbecues and campfires are both allowed to keep you warm while you do just that. Off site, this is a popular place for hill walking, and town wanders are easily accessible at nearby Abergavenny, Hay-on-Wye and Crickhowell. It's excellent terrain for cycling too: hire a bike on site or have your own spruced up at the cycle shop in the village. As for sprucing yourself up too, communal amenities on site include showers, toilets, a laundry area and a drying room; there are also charging and recycling facilities, and local produce for sale. If you are indeed planning a barbecue or picnic (or just need snacks) the nearest big town for supplies is Brecon, 15 minutes’ drive away. To eat out, four pubs are within a mile and a half at Talybont-on-Usk.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Before we began our stay, the owner contacted us to say that they recognised we were part of a larger group and would try and get us all on one pitch - which they did. It was a great pitch, complete with a shelter and picnic table.

We enjoyed the relaxed nature of the site, the views and the friendliness of the staff. It was a great place base ourselves.

The site was clean and tidy.

Disliked Nothing

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The views were breath taking, well worth the steep hill climb to camp. The owners were very welcoming, with many optional extras such as BBQ to hire and wood supply which was a great help. Plenty of toilets and good washing up facilities, we chose the busy weekend (bank holiday) so the washing area was busy, but normally would be ok. No wifi, but we still had signal at the top of the hill.

Disliked As a new camper facilities seemed basic, but ok for the couple of days camping we did - so I wouldn't suggest for first time campers

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The views are amazing. When shower had water it was nice and warm.

Disliked Awful toilets and shower. Shower doesn't have a light so pitch black when the door is closed. On our first night there wasn't any water at all so we couldn't wash our hands, shower, wash dishes or even flush the toilet. Majority of pitches are not on flat ground so very uncomfortable.
Very steep hill to get to the camping area, high chance or damage to cars. If the ground is wet I imagine it wouldnt be accessible.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Reasonably quiet for a site on a farm (could hear cows and sheep a lot but didn’t bother us), and beautiful views.

Disliked Do not stay at this site if you value your vehicle, unless you drive a 4x4 or a tractor! To access the site (once you manage to find it due to lack of signage!), you have to drive up a very steep, very poorly maintained track, which is best described as a dirt track. My Peugeot 2008 took an absolute beating to get up it, to which I am less than impressed with! Thankfully only stayed 1 night so only had to do it once.
Also, only 2 (dirty) toilets and 1 shower (can’t comment on this as didn’t have time to line up to use it!). And the pitches are far from level - making finding a suitable area to pitch up near impossible.

Primitive grass tent campsite (mountain view)

Liked Very good. Loved the views the owner was very friendly.

Disliked The toilets and shower could do with some additional lighting. Toilets did not flush too well.
Completely appreciate the owner has dogs and they roam freely which we understand although out dog was kept on leash as required and one of the dogs was a little aggressive to him which then put us a little on edge for the stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite (mountain view)

Liked Great location, had the field to ourselves for most of the time and the views were amazing.

Disliked Toilet and shower facilities were basic, there was no light in the shower so even in daylight when the door was closed you couldn’t see and the water didn’t drain away quick enough so the floor flooded and there was no where to hang stuff.

Primitive grass tent campsite (mountain view)

Liked Superb location, unbeatable views of the mountains, only a few minutes drive/ten minute walk to Tal y Bont with excellent pubs, shop and Indian restaurant.

Disliked Camp facilities very poor. Toilet block not acceptable, generally derelict outbuildings not at all suitable for children under ten.

Local attractions

Being in the Brecon Beacons, this is naturally excellent hillwalking territory – you can head straight out onto paths directly from the farm, or ask your hosts for tips on local routes including the Taff Trail, Henry Vaughan walk and Usk Valley Walk. If you’re trying to tick off a mountain or two, make a beeline for Pen y Fan (20 minutes’ drive) or the Sugar Loaf (35 minutes) For a bigger variety of alfresco activities, head to Llangorse Lake (20 minutes) for rock climbing, watersports and horse riding outings. Closer by, Cantref Adventure Farm (15 minutes) has riding lessons and horseback treks, plus all sorts of family antics including crazy golf, tractor rides and Europe’s longest sledge ride (oh, and pig racing…) The natural scenery around here is spectacular, of course – and the towns are pretty too. Crickhowell (20 minutes), Abergavenny (half an hour) and bookshop-filled Hay-on-Wye (35 minutes) are all worth a wander.
