Barbecue by the river

  • Scenic waterside site in the grounds of a former inn
  • A mile to the east of Llandrinio; a 20-minute drive from Oswestry
  • Free fishing for guests; direct access to the River Severn
If you're new to Powys and Shropshire, picking a well-positioned plot can be a tricky business – with scenic River Severn walks, Offa's Dyke Path and lots of lovely greenery about, you'll likely be hunting high and low for a place with access to all three. Enter The Boat House, a small-scale site in the grounds of a former inn that ticks all the aforementioned boxes. Besides adding a generous dollop of sightly scenery to your stay, this site's location on a river opens up a whole raft of leisure possibilities. Got a canoe, kayak or paddleboard? Carry it down the site's grassy slope and straight into the water. The Boat House also has fishing rights on this silvery stretch of the Severn, so you're welcome to cast your line and see what bites. The best part? Angling is free of charge for those who choose to make their holidays here. Facilities on site are simple but well-maintained: there are toilets and a shower where you can freshen up after messing about on the water. Being able to light up a barbecue may also help keep your travel team chipper. When the weather turns or you fancy something a little more elaborate than self-grilled grub, it's a short trip to larger towns like Oswestry (20 minutes' drive) where there's scope for dinner out. And, although pints are pulled no longer at The Boat House, it's a mere mile to a local Llandrinio pub.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Stunning well maintained campsite, with basic facilities. Pretty flat and on the river bank, with direct acccess into the river for kayaks etc. No probs having bbqs, fire pit etc, and could park car on your pitch.
Free tea, coffee, milk, fridge, freezer and power sockets in the small utility area

Disliked Site is larger than described, and although there was still lots of room, while we were there there was a group of approx 25-30 teenagers, all well behaved, but it did put pressure on the 2 toilets that are available, especially when in addition to the approx 10 campervans and numerous tents that were also pitched.
£2 charge for a shower which wasn’t mentioned anywhere on site description.
We chose to camp in the far camping field so as to be away from the large group, which meant a bit of a walk to the toilets etc (not a problem) but could of done with a water tap and bins in this field.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Beautiful landscape, right on the Severn with big, flat and well-maintained fields.
Freda was lovely and welcoming and helped me find the perfect spot.
The facilities are also top notch!

Disliked Nothing- there was some road noise but by nighttime that had gone and it didn’t detract from the scenery

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The quietness of the site, proximity to the river and the ‘help yourself to teas and coffees’ was a nice touch.

Local attractions

Offa's Dyke Path and the Severn Way both pass directly opposite the site, giving you lots of choice when it comes to pedestrian rambles. These long-distance paths open up a range of landscapes: while Offa's Dyke runs from north to south (or south to north, depending which way you look at it) along an Anglo-Saxon ridgeway, the Severn Way (as its name suggests) generally sticks close to Britain's longest river. If you've caught the walking bug, an active jaunt to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (30 minutes' drive) or Snowdonia National Park (about an hour) could also be on the agenda. If energy levels run low, though, perhaps you'll plump for a restorative ride on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway (30 minutes), followed by some tasty Welsh cakes. For a bit more history, there's the Llanfyllin Workhouse (20 minutes), Powis Castle (20 minutes) and the National-Trust managed Attingham Park Estate (30 minutes). If you like to combine the past with flurries of feathered flight, check out Battlefield Falconry Centre (30 minutes).
