  • Family-friendly site 15 minutes' drive from Elan Valley walks
  • Ramblers’ haven: Glyndŵrs Way, Ceredigion Coast Path within an hour
  • Simple pitches on a family farm with campfires and barbecues allowed
Bring your walking boots, bring your bikes, bring your cameras… Cae Llwyn Camping’s location on a Powys farm means that it’s an excellent base for all sorts of outdoorsy days. This family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Rhayader is particularly well placed for hikers: it’s 15 minutes' drive from the spectacular Elan Valley and has the Ceredigion Coast Path and Glyndŵrs Way within an hour as well. Getting out and about to all of these is fairly straightforward thanks to a handy location a short way off the A44 near Nantmel. Mountain bike trails, cycling paths and pony trekking are all available nearby too, and nearby Rhayader is famed for the red kites that fly overhead and often come down to feed. If you’d like a closer encounter with the big birds, sign up for a falconry day at one of the centres close by. Book a spot at Cae Llwyn and you’ll be staying on grass pitches at a family farm, with a river running past one end of the camping field. Simple facilities include a toilet and shower block, and you’ll be able to make the most of your evenings in the fresh air by lighting up a barbecue or campfire.

What customers say

Cae Llwyn Camping: Beautiful, quiet spot with a lovely stream. Spotless, modern facilities, friendly hosts, and a peaceful vibe. Downsides: sheep droppings in the field, and some found facilities far and noted a lack of trash cans.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Forty pounds for a weekend in a beautiful, quiet location, pitched next to a small brook winding through trees. What's not to like? Facilities were in good working order and kept spotless, hosts were very communicative and easy going. Our first camping adventure for about twenty years, this was the perfect first weekend we were looking for to encourage us to do more.

Disliked Not one thing.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Good field for tents, a wash station next to the field and a short walk to the facilities which were clean. It is a fairly peaceful site.

Disliked Too many sheep in the camping field this year meant clearing the over abundance of droppings as best as possible before putting up the tent.
The male shower cut heat after a few minutes leaving me to finish washing in decidedly cold water. It also did this the last time I visited.
A good site but I can't reccomend it at the moment due to the amount of droppings this year.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great location, lovely setting, warm welcome with clear instructions. Shower warm and clean, water point nearby camping field. Very quiet. Lodges and clamping tents looked amazing but I had brought my own tent. Dawn chorus incredible.

Disliked Not so much a dislike but a heads up that the camping field is shared with the sheep and their numerous droppings so keep a stick or spade handy to clear a patch. The sheep didn't bother me otherwise, made for good company and added to the 'wild camping' experience. Only 1 shower per gender so can imagine it can get busy but on a cold and wet April Easter weekend it was surprisingly quiet.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Location, small stream.

Disliked No running water for campers, very expensive wood for fires for what you get.

Mainly set up for holiday lodges.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The quiet, the views, the relaxed feel to t he place

Disliked the complete contrast between the cared for glamping area and the apparently neglected camping field.
The grass was v long and clumpy, therefore very wet.
The gate was a problem to shut/open
The washing up had no hot water
No rubbish facilities nearby.

Local attractions

Could it be the walks that have drawn you to this area? The Elan Valley (15 minutes’ drive) is a perennially popular location for hikers, with highlights including the Rhayader waterfalls and huge Craig Goch Dam to take in on your walks. If you’re after something more challenging, you’re not far from the 135-mile route of Glyndŵrs Way. A couple of local farms can fix you up with pony trekking if you’d like to explore in a different way, and there are also two falconry experiences within a few minutes’ drive of the site. A real must nearby is to stop in at the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhayader (10 minutes) to see the majestic birds swooping in for a meal. For a change of scenery it’ll take you a little under an hour to drive to the Ceredigion coast for walks on the coast path or a ride on the Vale of Rheidol Railway from Aberystwyth. You could stop in at Devil’s Bridge Falls (40 minutes) for another walk along the way too if you wish.
