  • Quiet adults-only riverside site in Crickhowell in the Usk valley
  • Between the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Excellently-maintained amenities including powerful hot showers
Peaceful times in Powys for adults only, along with spectacular valley views, a river setting, outdoor pursuits galore, and amenities so sparkling that the shower here has been lauded as 'the best I've ever had on a campsite' by a grateful former guest… it's a cert that you should meander along to Riverside Caravan Park. Taken over by new owners in 2017, Riverside is within walking distance of the handsome small town of Crickhowell, on the banks of the River Usk between the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Black Mountains. It's a place to firmly plonk yourself down at for many an outdoor activity – hiking, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, hang gliding, paragliding, climbing, watersports and river fishing are all around – or to settle serenely down for a heritage or festival trip to the many attractions, monuments and market towns within easy reach. Friendly local pubs, speciality shops and restaurants are within a five-minute walk. Riverside's spankingly up to date amenities include a laundry room, a washing-up area and a new shower/ toilet block added in 2017, with private washrooms, underfloor heating and free hot showers.

Local attractions

Crickhowell and its surrounds are popular Powys bases for outdoor adventurers, who come to hike, mountain bike or climb the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains, take to the skies paragliding and hang gliding, or cast off for plump brown trout in the Usk river. Cycling and walking trails for all ages are in the area too, such as the Crug Hywel or Table Mountain path a mile from Riverside, rising up for 451 metres above sea level to Crug Hywel's flat top and extensive Iron Age Celtic fort. Another excellent wander is alongside the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal four miles away (you can of course take a canal trip out onto the water as well). The history of Wales as the world's biggest producer of iron and coal is told at the acclaimed Blaenavon World Heritage Centre six or so miles away, centred around the quarries, coal and ore mines, workers' homes and furnaces of Blaenavon Ironworks. A visitor centre, museum, gallery and regular events and exhibitions delve into the full tale. Also around to see is the market town of Abergavenny (six miles), a pick-up point for the region's long-distance trails of the Marches Way, the Beacons Way and the Usk Valley Walk, all passing through the town. The bookshops and castle of Hay-on-Wye are about 20 miles away, and Cardiff within 40.
