  • Small family-friendly site in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons
  • Just off the A470, a 10-minute drive from Brecon
  • Peaceful setting next to woodland with a small stream running through
Stand by for action… Rhydywernen Farm Camping Site’s fab family farm location is in a most handy spot for getting out into the Brecon Beacons National Park for days of hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, gorge walking and pretty much any other activity you’re up for in this part of Powys. And then, stand by for chilling out… for this is a most peaceful location, with spacious pitches backing onto woodland and a small river that’s prime territory for such classic country pursuits as skimming stones and poking about with little fishing nets in search of minnows. Away from the water's edge guests are encouraged to meet the site's miniature donkeys, helping to feed them and put them to bed in the evenings. Barbecues with a backdrop of the Brecon Beacons are of course a fine way to sort dinner on site (firepits are available to hire, with firewood to buy). If the weather’s not up to it (or you’re just in the mood to let someone else do all the work), there are plenty of pubs, cafés and restaurants up the road in Brecon. Work up an appetite for your eats with an hour-long stroll along quiet country paths, or get in the car for the easy 10-minute journey to town along the A470 (also a handy road for getting to other corners of the national park or heading across country to the north or south). Please note this is a family-friendly site: no open fires, no bad language and no loud music after 10.30pm please. Facilities on site include toilets, a washing-up area and free hot showers.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked It was great - we stayed for one night while hiking up the Brecon beacon, and this was the perfect place to stop over. The showers were hot, the campsite was ideal for pitching our tent, and there was a beautiful river running through the site. I can imagine it would be amazing to swim in on a warmer day after a long walk.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Great location, large pitches, peaceful scenic setting.
Lovely, clean facilities.
Owners very friendly and on site to answer any queries.

Disliked Only 4 toilets (plus a urinal), and 4 showers, for the whole site.
Whilst we were there, the water was tepid and at one stage, the showers were not functioning at all. Very disappointing.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Location is handy for the mountains, nice river right by the site. Spacious site and well set up facilities. The shower block and washing up facilities are modern and well organised. The planter with herbs in for cooking was a nice touch.

Disliked If I was being fussy I’d say the showers needed a bit more of a clean, the clogged shower plug hole with loads of old hair wasn’t great.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Facilities were clean and functional, site was easy to find, owners were responsive to phone calls, proximity to hikes, the river and working farm environment, relative proximity to town with supermarkets, friendliness and respectfulness of other campers

Disliked field layout is essentially a square, and because everyone really wants to park by the river you end up camping between cars which hurts the "in nature" feeling.
the motorway nearby can be heard throughout the night. not loudly, but again pulls you out of the "in nature" feeling.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hello, guest are more than welcome to pitch up in the middle of the field as-well as the edge. We are not by a motorway! It’s the A470. Thanks

A little gem

Local attractions

So much activity awaits in the Brecon Beacons National Park: pick a gentle hike around woods and waterfalls if you want, or get stuck in to scaling Pen y Fan (25 minutes’ drive away and southern Britain’s highest mountain). Horse riders can saddle up at the stables 10 minutes away, while those who like to zoom around on mountain bikes can get some speed up at BikePark Wales (25 minutes). The outdoorsy antics don’t end there – Brecon’s something of a hub for such things, and activity centres around the town can sort you with rafting, canoeing, high ropes courses and gorge scrambling. All sound a bit too exhausting? Take a more leisurely ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway (25 minutes) before heading home via the Penderyn whisky distillery (20 minutes). Break out of the Beacons for trips to some of the area’s other attractions: Llandovery Castle is half an hour away, as is the book-loving town of Hay-on-Wye. A little further north but worth a trip are the lakes of the Elan valley and the red kite feeding station in Rhyader; both are around an hour’s drive away.
