  • Quiet and laidback farm campsite by the river Teifi
  • Half an hour's drive to Aberaeron on the coast; Aberystwyth 35 minutes
  • Pet-friendly back to basics camping; river fishing allowed
Back to basics rural stays is the name of the game at Pen Y Bont, a farm site located in a pretty countryside location about a mile from the village of Tregaron. Here you are free to visit the farm and its animals, head out for long walks along the gorgeous river Teifi and take advantage of its two miles of accessible frontage to go fishing. Pets are welcome at Pen Y Bont, and there's plenty of space for them to run free and appreciate the freedom of country life. You can also set up a barbecue for alfresco meals with family and friends, or just lie back at night watching the stars, as this part of the West Wales countryside has very little light pollution. On the whole, Pen Y Bont keeps things simple as far as facilities go, with only a toilet block on the facilities front. Stepping away from the pitches, it's a breeze to get down into Tregaron (five minutes' drive), where you have takeaways, a kids' play area, a well-stocked local shop and the Tregaron Kite Centre and Museum.

Local attractions

Pen Y Bont is a five-minute drive from Cors Caron National Nature Reserve, a huge area of wild wetlands fed by the river Teifi just outside Tregaron. There are a range of circular and linear walks here, including boardwalks and flat accessible paths along an old railway line. Cyclists can also head here to join the scenic Ystwyth Trail, part of the Sustrans national cycle network. Should you fancy a day down the coast, you can reach the pretty port town of Aberaeron in roughly half an hour, where you can stroll along the Georgian quay, set off on dolphin-spotting excursions in Cardigan Bay or head to Llanerchaeron Villa, a National Trust-owned property just outside the town. The handsome seaside university town of Aberystwyth is also within easy reach (35 minutes), while surfers will find good conditions in either New Quay or Borth (both an hour from base). The Cambrian Mountains can also be visited for the day, with highlights including the Devil's Bridge Falls (35 minutes) and the hillfort of Pen y Bannau and Strata Florida Abbey (both 25 minutes).

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Simple and rustic with no fancy frills, but was perfect for what our family needed. Our son was visiting and wanted to ride the railroad in Aberystwyth so we decided to drive from the UK to Wales the night before and campout. Pen Y Bont was in a great location, super quiet, beautiful, and a great price for one night of "roughing it." We would stay again.

Disliked: It was hard to find (no obvious signs announcing you had arrived), but once we were in general area owner was quick to answer cell phone and we quickly found the right road to the farm.

Liked: Host was amazing, extremely nice helped us with whatever we needed and came over for a chat every now and then. Amazing, especially for the price. Farmland was amazing and so nice to see all the animals and talk to the owner about it. 10/10 would recommend to anyone.
