  • Quiet and simple campsite five minutes' walk from Ynyslas beach
  • Just under two miles from Borth; Aberystwyth 20 minutes' drive
  • Set on a smallholding with views over a nature reserve and an estuary
With a no-frills approach and golden sand five minutes’ stroll away, Tŷ-Gwyn Campsite is certainly worth writing home about. This peaceful, grassy site is set on a traditional smallholding on the coast of West Wales… and it doesn’t hold back on the views either. They include vistas over the Cors Fochno nature reserve, the Dyfi Estuary and the sea. Five minutes' walk from Ynyslas beach and within two miles of the popular seaside village of Borth, it's all about simple camping in a laidback environment here. The facilities, while basic, are good, with toilets, a shower block and washing-up facilities. Waste and recycling facilities are provided too. The site's no-frills design means you'll have plenty of time to set off over the sand dunes of Ynyslas, light up a barbecue (they're allowed on site as long as they're kept well off the grass) or to take your dog for long seaside strolls. One such walk takes the riverside footpath down to the village of Borth to catch the sunset. If the four miles there and back is a bit of a stretch, it's five minutes in the car, or there’s an hourly bus service that’ll sort the journey for you. Once you're in Borth, the village has plenty of handy amenities that may well come in handy, including a railway station, local shops, a fish and chip shop and pubs. That’s not forgetting the Borth Golf Club for those of you who have a good swing. Please note that a railway line runs alongside the site, with train movements once an hour.

What customers say

A highly rated, no-frills campsite with a chill vibe & great value. Staff are super friendly & helpful, and the beach is a short 5-min walk away, with amazing views. Basic but very clean facilities. Lots of space, you can pick your own spot. A nearby train line is rarely an issue. Perfect for a classic, easygoing camping trip.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Staff are friendly and very helpful. Sort walk to the sea. Would definitely stay here again. Would give one tip though. If pitching bring hard ground pegs.

Disliked Train track is a wee bit close. But dose not take much to get used too.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The campsite is well-maintained but very basic, perfect for those looking for a quiet family stay. It is about 5 minutes walking distance from the beach, which isn't that busy even during hot weekends. The campsite owner was very friendly and helpful. It is highly recommended for more advanced and prepared camping lovers, as there aren't many shops around.

Disliked The Wi-Fi signal is only available around the main building, but who needs it whilst enjoying the outdoors

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The warm welcome, cleanliness and location. 10 mins walk from a decent family friendly bar and grill. No "facilities" as such for youngsters, but plenty of space. Next to a railway line on one side and a road on the other but the noise isn't obtrusive. Facilities basic but spotless.

Local attractions

Getting to know this area starts with the local towns. In Aberystwyth (20 minutes’ drive), you could board the Vale of Rheidol Railway to chug around woodlands, or the cliff railway for views of the sea from up high. With escape rooms, an Edwardian theatre and a horse riding centre, there’s plenty of variety. The same can be said for Aberaeron (45 minutes), which joins up with The Coastal Way path and has a lively harbourside that operates wildlife-spotting boat trips. Machynlleth (20 minutes), part of the UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere, is home to local art galleries, antique stores and plenty of eateries to fuel your adventures outwards too. The energy is likely to come in handy for the Devil's Bridge Falls (35 minutes) in the Cambrian Mountains, where the trails take you through a wooded gorge with a waterfall. RSPB Ynys-hir (15 minutes), too, where the walks travel past salt marsh, oak woods and plenty of hiding places for wildlife. Keen to see more animals while on your adventures? The Animalarium (five minutes) is a small zoo with animals that were once held captive, while Dyfi Osprey Project (15 minutes) has a beaver family and ospreys.
