  • Quiet pitches on a 20-acre meadow bordered by woods and a stream
  • A five-minute drive from Aberystwyth and 10 minutes from Borth
  • Walk to Clarach Bay in 20 minutes along a footpath and lane
‘Our aim is to create a relaxing nature-focused environment’ say the folk at Nantcellan Barns – and they’ve certainly achieved that with their peaceful Ceredigion site, which is spread over a 20-acre meadow and bordered by a small stream and native woodlands. Much effort is going into improving this ex-dairy pastureland and managing the woodlands to create better habitats for native wildlife while also providing plenty of grazing for the resident working draft horses. Stays here go towards funding this work, so you can feel like you’re doing good while also staying in a fabulous rural spot. From this quiet family-friendly site it’s about a 20-minute walk along a footpath and lane to Clarach Bay for a sheltered sandy/shingle beach and seafront café bars serving up woodfired pizzas, fish and chips, coffees and cakes. And if you want to see more of Ceredigion’s wonderful coastline (and no doubt you will…) you can then pick up the coast path for strolls south towards Aberystwyth or north to Borth. Both of those places are great destinations for beaches, things to do and places to eat – if you’d rather drive straight there it’s about five minutes to Aberystwyth or 10 minutes to Borth. Beyond Borth is the Dyfi Biosphere, a protected natural landscape that’s well worth exploring. Alternatively, head inland to places like Nant y Moch for more walking and bike trail options. In keeping with their mission, the owners have kept the offerings here simple to avoid too much impact on the land, but guests will have access to showers, portable toilets and a washing-up area, and are welcome to bring barbecues or light campfires.

What customers say

Spacious, quiet site with stunning location & coastal access. Praised for open-air showers, communal kitchen & friendly hosts. Good value, though some found it basic & noted issues with portaloos & rubbish. Ideal for a back-to-basics, nature-focused trip.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked At first the site looks respectable but that was quickly ruined by a lady who lives in a tent at the top left of the field

Disliked As a respectable camper we came to the site to enjoy a peaceful evening in front of our fire, this was ruined by a lady who lives on site who was very rude to us. We then couldn’t not sleep as there was absolutely disgusting sexual noises coming from her caravan which is sited at the top left of the site. Over priced and disgusting behaviour. Please avoid! Especially if you have children

From the manager: Really sorry you felt this way. A member of our team asked if you could turn down your music (politely) so it didn’t disturb the other campers because the site is a quiet, family friendly site, we allow groups to stay with the trust that they follow the site rules.

Liked Lovely site, flat grass. Owners are lovely and do a walk around to say hello. Nice to have marked footpaths to beach

Disliked Toilets and showers basic for the price, have to remove rubbish. One staff member rude to guests

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Spacious field, clean site, can see the sea. The location between Aberystwyth and Borth is convenient and close to some of the best cliff and beach walks and views in the country.
The kitchen facilities and the open-roof hot shower were wonderful.
Generally people were very respectful and quiet.

Disliked Two lots of people next to us had dogs running loose, which is not permitted on the site.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Quite campsite, big flat pitches . Hot showers - I liked they deliberately did not have a roof! Nice touches include the seating area which has cover, benches and washing up area. Basic with calm.

Disliked The thing I didn’t like was that there weren’t any bins and taking your rubbish with you was difficult on a motorcycle.

Local attractions

It’s likely that you’ll be popping to Aberystwyth (five minutes’ drive) for supplies – but don’t limit your outing to just the shops, as this coastal town also has a castle and museum to visit and the funicular Cliff Railway to ride. You can also board the Vale of Rheidol Railway here for a trip to the Devil’s Bridge waterfalls. Elsewhere along the coast it’s worth visiting Borth (10 minutes) at low tide to see the petrified forest, or heading a little further along the coast for a day in Aberaeron (half an hour), often described as one of the prettiest seaside locations in Wales. New Quay (45 minutes) should be on the cards for dolphin-spotting boat trips too. Back on land, there’s more wildlife to see at RSPB Ynys-hir nature reserve (20 minutes) or Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest (20 minutes), which has walking and bike trails as well as a red kite feeding centre where you can see the big birds up close as they swoop in for their lunch.
