  • Peaceful site on a smallholding a half-hour’s drive from Aberystwyth
  • Cardigan Bay beaches 20 minutes’ drive; Cae Hir Gardens 25 minutes
  • Static caravan with well-equipped kitchen; outdoor area with barbecue
If you’re up for a rural idyll, long for a bit of solitude and dig the idea of waking up to far-reaching views of the gentle hills of western Wales, you’d better book your spot at Glanaeron Camping. Sitting close to the River Aeron, on the outskirts of the peaceful village of Bontnewydd (about half an hour’s drive south east of Aberystwyth), this site on a smallholding welcomes families with children (as long as the kids are at least eight years of age). Accommodation is in a static caravan that feels remarkably private, screened off from the main house (where the owners live) and with its own outdoor seating area, where you can grill your meals on the barbecue and linger till late gazing up at the vast night sky. Provisions can be purchased in the village of Llanilar (five minutes’ drive) or Aberystwyth. No worries if the weather isn’t playing ball (or if you just can’t get the barbecue going – happens to us all): there’s a well-equipped kitchen inside the caravan, too, with a gas hob, fridge freezer and microwave, alongside other rainy-day appliances like a TV and a DVD player. However… would you really want to watch TV when there are 12 acres of land for you to explore? Not to mention many splendid walks and bike rides right on your doorstep (speaking of cycling, the site has a locked secure unit for your wheels), plus the beaches of Cardigan Bay a 20-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Surround yourself with colourful blooms at Cae Hir Gardens (25 minutes’ drive), where you can stroll at leisure on tree-lined paths, past a stream and areas planted with wildflowers. The tea room serves home-baked treats, and the site also runs Silent Space Sundays. In addition to a handful of beaches (including pebbly Penparcau, overlooked by the Pen Dinas Hill Fort), Aberystwyth has a pretty marina and the ruins of a medieval castle. You can also book a ride on the early 20th-century Vale of Rheidol Railway, which travels for 12 miles through spectacular woodland. After catching the daily spectacle of dozens of red kites feeding at Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest Visitor Centre (40 minutes), stay in the area to explore walking trails or to let the kids have a go on the mountain-biking track in the skills park. There are also play areas, including one with climbing structures and a fireman’s pole.
