Busy campsite
Grass pitches

  • Sheltered and peaceful pitches on the banks of the Wick River
  • A 10-minute walk to Wick; 25 minutes' drive to John o' Groats
  • Part of a community enterprise
What a splendid spot for a break in the Caithness countryside – the sheltered pitches at Wick River Campsite sit in a secluded and quiet location right on the banks of the Wick River, and yet they’re only a handy 10-minute walk from the various shops, pubs and takeaways of Wick. That setting also means that you’ll be within easy reach of plenty of things to keep you busy for several days – a short stroll into town gives you the opportunity to board wildlife-spotting boats, sample the delights of the Pulteney Distillery or take a bracing dip in the outdoor tidal pool (or the indoor pool if you’re not quite brave enough to face the chilly waters of the North Sea…) This is a site that’s run as a community enterprise, with all profits fed back into improving the site or contributing to local projects that will benefit visitors and residents alike. Stay here and you’ll be supporting a great cause as well as putting yourselves within easy reach of places like John o’ Groats and activities like fishing, golf and coast walks. Facilities on site have been kept to the essentials, with portable toilets and showers available for guests, and a play park just next door. Dogs are welcome to stay here too and join you for walks along the riverside trails that start just outside the site (these are great for a family bike ride too).

What customers say

This community-run park gets rave reviews for its modern facilities, friendly staff, and beautiful riverside setting near Wick. Pitches are spacious and well-kept, the park is very clean and organized. Minor notes on the alternate entrance for big rigs and occasional gnats didn't dampen spirits, with most eager to come back.

Liked Great welcome from the staff and spacious pitches.
Great selection in the shop.

Disliked Limited showers as half out of action
Lack of character, that’s very picky but you did ask!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review.

Unfortunately at the time of your visit we were carrying out a prolonged pressure test on the showers to try to identify a leak somewhere in the system, so we had to shut off half of the showers at a time, but hopefully still having 3 showers available in the males, 3 in the females, the accessible shower room and the family shower room, meant there was still plenty of showers available for you to use, and it did not spoil your stay with us.

We are sorry that you felt our new facilities block was lacking in character, we have made every effort to design the facilities block to have that 5 star "Spa" feeling.

Liked Bright and airy campsite, buildings complimented the surroundings. Campsite hidden from view by trees. Excellent facilities with spacious shower cubicles. Very clean staff very friendly. Shop well stocked with a variety of goods.

Disliked No cubicles for washing in ladies . Like a bit of privacy if washing instead of showering.

Powered grass tent or RV campsite (large)

Liked New and modern facilities. Friendly staff. Plenty of space for pitches. Good park for the children. Well stocked shop. Warm and clean shower block.

Disliked Washer / dryer are expensive and didn’t clean or dry properly. Shower block gets heavy use and could do with more frequent cleaning.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review.

This is the first issue that has ever been reported about the washing machines and dryers. We will double check them to make sure there are no blocked or dirty filters.

The dryers are condenseing so take a little longer to dry than a vented or larger commercial dryer. Most comments regarding the costs for the laundry state the prices are good value for money.

The Facilities block is checked every couple of hours so there must have been an issue inbetween checks, but we will reinforce the importance of doing thourough checks with all staff members to make sure.

Excellent site, would highly recommend.

Liked Great site. Plenty of space. Helpful staff. Whole site clean and tidy

Disliked Slight negative weak water pressure in the shower

Regarding the water pressure. Unfortunately to operate on an environmentally friendly system, the pressure has to be a little lower than you would find in the likes of a Premier Inn. This is to ensure there is enough hot water being heated by the Air Source Heat Pumps, and to ensure there is always enough hot water to supply the 14 showers in the facilities block..

Liked Clean tidy, modern facilities, 5/6 minute walk into Wick.

Disliked Shower was not very powerful and the water temperature was warm not hot, the electric hook up was a long way from the actual pitch.

This is to ensure there is enough hot water being heated by the Air Source Heat Pumps, and to ensure there is always enough hot water to supply the 14 showers in the facilities block.

There was an issue with the water not being hot enough as we forgot to adjust it back up to full temeperature at the beginning of the season, but as soon as we realised there was an issue this was rectified within a few minutes.

Each electric hook up bollard supplies 3 or 4 pitches. This means that some bollards are further away from pitches than others, however on ones that are a little two far we have additional 16Amp cable reels mounted for these pitches, and we can also loan out 16Amp extension cables if someone arrives with a cable less than 25m

Local attractions

Wick, of course, is the place to start – you can walk into the centre of town to visit the Wick Heritage Centre, grab a dram or two at Pulteney Distillery or head to the harbour to book a boat trip taking you out among the sea stacks and along the cliffs to see if you can spot seals, puffins and other marine life. Elsewhere along the coast, find the ruins of Castle of Old Wick (10 minutes’ drive) and Sinclair Girnigoe Castle (15 minutes), explore the intriguing stone creations at Hill O’ Many Stanes (15 minutes) or check out the natural rock formations at Whaligoe Steps (15 minutes) and Duncansby Stacks (25 minutes). Of course you can’t miss the opportunity to go up to the very north of Scotland to visit John O’Groats (25 minutes) and RSPB Dunnet Head (40 minutes). While you’re in the area, stop by at the 16th-century Castle & Gardens of Mey (half an hour) or take a detour to Reiss Sands (10 minutes) for a stroll among the dunes.
