Liking the idea of discovering a secret garden? Fancy a foodie paradise on your doorstep? Look forward to all this when you camp (in some luxury, by the way) on the private estate at Feather Down - Chesters, 15 minutes’ drive from Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. As you’ll realise, food and drink is a major theme of any stay here. Camp out in the woods, and you’ll soon come across the two-acre walled garden filled with seasonal vegetables that are yours to pick and eat. From your pitch, take a boat ride down the River Teviot to a visitor centre, café and restaurant in a former farm steading; here you can pick up local produce including cheese and beer. The estate has its own real-ale microbrewery, and also owns the Ancrum Cross Keys pub (five minutes’ drive), known for delicious food thanks to its Gordon Ramsay-trained chef. So – no shortage of special things to eat and drink here – but what of the accommodation? Luckily it’s just as special. Ultra-luxurious safari tents are equipped with outdoor showers and flushing loos, comfortable mattresses and a living space that accommodates up to six with ease. Even better, exclusive-use hot tubs sit next to each tent so you can relax in the peaceful Borders countryside. There’s still plenty to do though. The estate is full of leafy nooks and crannies – including a treehouse – to explore, and is home to sheep, cattle, deer, pheasants, partridges, buzzards and myriad rabbits. You can also fish for salmon and trout (in season) on the river (bring your own gear, no licence required).

Local attractions

If you’re into keeping active, you can explore the Borders in a number of ways. Try pony trekking from Ferniehurst Mill Lodge (20 minutes’ drive), cycle to the arboretum of ancient trees at Monteviot Gardens (20 minutes’ bike ride), and take a dip in the River Teviot from your pitch. Combine exercise with a purpose on the course at Minto Golf Club (10 minutes’ drive). If the weather turns drizzly on you, take the kids swimming at Teviotdale Leisure Centre (20 minutes), while another family-friendly option is a stroll along the Jed Water overlooking Jedburgh Castle and Abbey (15 minutes). Soak up the atmosphere of the Middle Ages at three more great ruined Borders abbeys – all linked by the Borders Abbeys Way. Kelso is known for its Romanesque architecture, and rose-coloured Melrose is burial place of the head of Robert the Bruce. Founded in 1150, Dryburgh Abbey (all 20 minutes) sits on the River Tweed and you can search for the tombs of Sir Walter Scott and Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig in its atmospheric grounds.
