  • Log cabin in a forested Perthshire setting close to the River Earn
  • Drummond Castle Gardens 25 minutes’ drive; Stirling Castle 50 minutes
  • Cosy interior with well-equipped kitchenette; outdoor area with views
Fancy staying in a wood cabin on the outskirts of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park? Then Chapters Cabin might just be what you’re looking for. At this adults-only site in Perthshire you can bring your dog and explore the spectacular landscape at your leisure. Close to the River Earn, the sweetly decorated cabin makes a great spot for a romantic getaway, with a well-equipped kitchenette, a cosy double bed with cushions, quilts and woolly blankets, and a pretty outside area with deckchairs and far-reaching views. You can also have a barbecue under the stars here. The nearest shop for provisions is in the village of St Fillans. A 10-minute stroll across the river takes you past the St. Fillans Monster (an unusual rock painted to look like a dragon-type creature) and to the shores of Loch Earn (half an hour's walk in total or a five-minute drive from the site). Walks and cycle rides around this lake might yield encounters with kingfishers, herons and ospreys, plus woodland creatures like hares and deer. You can also take to the water for a spot of kayaking or canoeing, or hire a fishing boat from Drummond Estate. Scotland is renowned for its golf courses, and there are several within a half-hour drive of the site, including St Fillans (five minutes), Comrie (10 minutes; here you can combine a game of golf with a scenic hike up to Deil’s Cauldron Waterfall) and Crieff (20 minutes).

Local attractions

Do you have an eye for geometrical designs? You'll probably appreciate the formal landscapes at Drummond Castle Gardens (25 minutes’ drive), with their symmetrical layouts and manicured yew hedges. A series of interesting events is held here, from archery competitions to classic car rallies. Sitting atop a craggy rock, Stirling Castle (50 minutes) was the childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots. It’s well worth a visit for its enormous Banqueting Hall, elegantly furnished royal chambers and carefully recreated series of tapestries, not to mention expansive views from the battlements. If you’re into militaria, there’s also the Regimental Museum. For an insight into Scottish life in the Iron Age, you can head to the northernmost tip of Loch Tay and the Scottish Crannog Centre (one hour). This open-air museum celebrates the humble (and yet extraordinarily sophisticated for 2,500 years ago) crannog, a dwelling built on stilts in the water. You can also take part in workshops exploring crafts like basket weaving and leather pouch making.

Liked: This cabin, set in beautiful grounds of an old home, is cosy, quiet & fully equipped. The surroundings are stunning, you can walk to the river, walk into the woods & feel the quietness of nature.

Disliked: The cottage does look onto a working farm. We had no noise or issue with this but view is the farmbuildings.
