Local attractions

Balquhidder lies at the head of Loch Voil, south west of Lochearnhead. The lochs, river, and glens around Balquhidder are steeped in history and closely association with the MacGregors, especially the famous outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor. The village attracts many visitors from around the world who come to see the final resting place of Rob Roy, in Balquhidder Kirkyard alongside his wife and two sons. Balquhidder is also a popular place for walking with many scenic routes, such as the Rob Roy walking trail, Kirkton Pass, and Balquhidder Glen. There are also a number of paths that lead out into the surrounding mountains including Stob Binnein 3,822 ft (1165 m) and Ben More 3,851 ft (1174 m). It is worth a visit to the village where there are the remains of a number of pre-historic sites including a stone circle, the Pudreag Stone, and a Neolithic burial chamber cairn to the east. There are near-by amenities such as shops which can be found south in the town of Callander, or north in the village of Killin. Also a few activities on our doorstep: Cycling: We are right on Cycle Route 7 which runs from Ayrshire right up to Inverness. For an easier local ride turn left and cycle the newly opened track to Strathyre Village - you can by a drink or ice-cream at the Village shop or the Broch Cafe, or meals at the Inn. Turn right for the spectacular track up Glen Ogle (or ask us to give you a lift up the road in the Landrovers and do the much easier freewheel back!) Fishing: For excellent local fishing information visit www.fishingtackleshopuk.co.uk, or visit James Bayne Fishing Tackle Shop on the High Street in Callander. Horse Riding: Castle Rednock farm trekking center is between Thornhill and Port of Menteith on the road to Aberfoyle from Stirling, 30 minutes from Stirling and only 10 minutes from Callander. They also offer Segway trails for other members of the family who prefer other ways of trekking. Golf: There are local courses in Callander, Killin, St Fillans, Aberfoyle and Dryman. The National Park Golf Pass offers visitors to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park the opportunity to play five quality golf courses within the area.
