Walkers and whisky lovers, gather round – Speyside by Craigellachie Camping and Caravanning Club Site makes an excellent base for your time in the Scottish Highlands. With the Cairngorms National Park to the south, the Moray coast to the north and the Speyside Way close by, there are plenty of activities and attractions around here to keep you busy for days on end. Five minutes’ drive from the ‘whisky town’ of Craigellachie, this peaceful spot also has handy access to public transport right from the site entrance, making it easy to get out for hikes, boat trips and visits to castles or distilleries. This site is managed by the Camping and Caravanning Club, and open to both members and non-members, with a discounted rate for members. There’s a special price for members, however, so please make sure you’ve chosen the right membership status when making your booking. All the facilities you need for a stress-free camping trip are here, from a modern bathroom block with wheelchair-accessible facilities to washing machines and a chemical disposal point. Kids and dogs are welcome on site, where there’s a playground and designated dog-walking areas. There’s also a food shop for stocking up on essentials. Pitches are lined with trees and hedges for that quiet and secluded feel, and it’s worth noting that the terrain is gently sloping so you may need levelling chocks for touring vehicles.

Local attractions

Whisky buffs have their pick of renowned distilleries: part of the Malt Whisky Trail, Glenfiddich Distillery Visitor Centre (15 minutes’ drive) is open daily for tours, tastings and pre-booked masterclasses. Speyburn, Glenfarclas, Ballindalloch and Glenrothes distilleries are all within 20 minutes’ drive. A little further afield is The Genlivet Distillery (half an hour) at the gateway to the Cairngorms National Park; combine a morning of whisky tasting with an afternoon of testing your cycling skills on the woodland bike trails at Bike Glenlivet (40 minutes). If you’d rather stay on two feet, take the looped hike to Càrn Daimh from Glenlivet (about an hour’s walk) for views over the spectacular Ladder Hills. Head to Nairn (50 minutes’ drive) for a dip in the North Sea (weather permitting, of course) from its extensive sandy beaches, or explore the austere Culloden Battlefield (an hour) with its immersive displays on clan history. Chase down the ghost of Shakespeare’s Macbeth at Cawdor Castle and Gardens (also an hour), or see where the real-life Macbeth was buried in the eerie ruins of Elgin Cathedral (half an hour) overlooking the River Lossie.
