  • Family park with view over St Andrews and St Andrews Links
  • Less than four miles from the coast
  • Campfires allowed and firepits for hire
Golf widows and widowers unite. If your lesser half insists on St Andrews for this year’s holiday so they can tee off all trip, insist in turn on carting them to nearby St Andrews Holiday Estate. The prospect of splendid sunsets and sumptuous views should be highly persuasive, and if they’re still in doubt, point out that St Andrews Links is viewable from the site so you can look lovingly in their general direction even if they're out teeing off. (Then, of course, trot along to the village tavern in Strathkinness a short stroll away or to Dundee six miles away for some shopping. Result.) St Andrews Holiday Estate has ace views over St Andrews town and St Andrews Bay too – seriously, bring the camera – and there are three and a half acres of this family-run and family-friendly site to explore, including a huge field with goalposts for kids to muck about in (there’s a small play area too, and a couple of playgrounds just along the road in Strathkinness). A well-stocked shop and the launderette cover the basics, and the amenities including heated shower blocks and a family shower with disabled access are kept to spotless standards by the dedicated team. Campfires are allowed and a range of firepits are available to hire for your stay: this site will surely suit the hole family down to a tee…

Local attractions

Come rain or shine, there’s a veritable host of things to do around St Andrews, with the added bonus for golf widow/ers of feeling smug on soggy days when no golf is possible. (You’ll probably have to go to the British Golf Museum instead, but trade that for a day’s shopping.) St Andrews is well worth a potter around even for non-golfers: 13th-century Holy Trinity Parish Church and the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral and clifftop St Andrews Castle are pulls for thousands of visitors every year. And as it’s a student centre, you’ll be well sorted for festivals, theatre, live music and other sophistication, with plenty of pubs and a couple of spas for chilling out. Around the region, St Andrews Holiday Estate is only a few miles from many popular beaches: West Sands, the two-mile length of sand used in Those Scenes in Chariots of Fire, runs adjacent to St Andrews Links, and Fife as a whole has five of Scotland’s seven Blue Flag winners. If you’re holidaying with the kids, they can learn or polish their cantering skills at the horse riding school just outside town. For rainy days, East Sands Leisure Centre has a pool and flumes to splash around in and the New Picture House Cinema shows kid-friendly films every day in school holidays.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Views, playground, big green space around

Disliked: Absolutely terrible toilet and shower facilities, although cleaned maybe regularly, there are overdue an update. Spiders, wasps and other dead bugs lying and hanging around. Not pleasant at all. Would not have a shower here due to old and not clean appearance. Toilets were ok, but small cubicle. I had booked for two nights, paid deposit and rest of money was due on day of arrival. I was called at least four times four days before arriving to pay the money sooner. It appeared like a spam, because I assumed the campsite would know terms and conditions of the booking and did not even Sen any email informing. This experience was very unpleasant and made me feel anxious to be chased up before it was due. I am experienced camper. It is expensive here for the service and facilities you get.

My site was flat but only because we choice our own pitch. L

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Easy booking via pitch up. Easy check in process on arrival at camp. Nice play area.

Disliked: Facilities were pretty disgusting. Not cleaned at all the entire stay. Very run down-locks not working, multiple toilets out of order, plasterboard bubbling with water leakage, mould growing in shower cubicles. Shower curtains visibly dirty. Bin system non existent-a big skip for rubbish, no recycling facilities. The pitches-a total free for all. We were told in arrival to pick any electric hook up. We had lovely neighbours hooked up next to us, but there was no boundary for the pitches, the 2nd night, we had a camper van on either side of us, practically on top on our guy ropes! The people were lovely, but the set up of the campsite is chaotic. There is a big wide space for grass pitches in the middle of the campsite, but this was not being used, so a game of football was started at about 8pm at night-I have a 3 year old, who was totally baffled and scared by all the noise. No one on site to monitor what was happening (the football wasn’t really a problem, just more where it was being played?!)

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Great location, clean and tidy and the children had an amazing time playing at the park and meeting new friends. The staff were super friendly and helpful and totally went out there way to make sure that your stay was enjoyable. Really had the best weekend and sad this is going to be the last year that it is open for camping.

Disliked: Nothing every was super.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The location was nice and the actual pitches were well looked after. The lady who ran the shop was really nice.

Disliked: The male toilet was in a very poor state of repair, it was quiet on the first night but on night 2 there were large groups all together and the tents near ours were shouting, laughing and screaming until after midnight but no staff on site came to police the behaviour, no point having rules if no one is there to enforce them
