  • Peaceful, family-friendly holiday park in the hills of Dumfries
  • Dumfries, Moffat, castles and cycle routes within an hour's drive
  • Bar and bistro, forest walks and private fjord for fishing
When you think of Scotland, what leaps to mind? If you answered stunning scenery, spectacular lochs and Mel Gibson, well… two out of three ain’t bad. Settle in at Dumfries and Galloway's Moffat Manor Holiday Park, just outside the small village of Beattock and 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Moffat, for views, rambles and relaxing by the water. This is a splendid spot for bikers of all sorts: if you like to stick to the roads, you can pedal along Route 74 from Beattock towards Gretna Green to join the famed Sea to Sea Cycle Route, or you can up the adrenaline with trips to two of the 7stanes mountain biking centres (Mabie and the Forest of Ae) for going-downhill-at-speed days. You don’t need to go far for holiday explores though: the site is on more than 80 acres of woodland, with loads of country walks along pretty streams and even a private loch for waterside strolls and a spot of fishing. When your stomach starts rumbling, saunter over to the Lakeside Tavern & Restaurant for a bite to eat and a couple of drinks, as well as a few nights’ evening entertainment. The Lakeside is only open from Wednesday to Sunday, so you’re on your own the rest of the week – fire up the barbecue if you fancy (an on-site shop has all the essentials and there’s a supermarket in Moffat), or head into Moffat or Dumfries to dine at one of the restaurants.

What customers say

Friendly staff, pleasant park, great walks. Good value, near Moffat. BUT renovations mean temporary, sometimes inadequate facilities. Some pitches sloped, electric issues, and upkeep needed in areas. Site has potential.

Liked The site was nice - rabbits roaming in the evening if it’s quiet and lots of things for kids (playgrounds etc)… I am sure that the static caravans make it his a really good option for a few days away.

Disliked The touring pitch facilities are inadequate. The established toilet block is no longer in use and has been replaced
By 2 portakabins. One for the gents and one for ladies. The gents one has two showers, two sinks, two urinals and two toilet cubicles. Woefully inadequate for the number of people they had accepted onto touring pitches.

There is 1 pot wash!

The touring field is a slope!

In addition to all of this the people touring left the toilets in a terrible state. Sick in the sinks, rubbish everywhere. They were not helped by the level of cleaning which seemed to be once a day - inadequate for the level of footfall.

Moffat Manor - please put up some signs. Generally people follow rules, but there are none and there are no reminder signs. Every decent campsite I go to has signs and reminders and they work!

Liked The grounds on site were lovely’ there was nice walks round about for the dogs and beattock was a short walk away with a lovely pub in it put on site was lovely as well but never sampled the food

Disliked Pitches were on a slope thankfully ours wasn’t too bad, the portacabin for the toilets and showers were filthy and no evidence of being cleaned until Sunday but I think because a lot of people were complaining, there was loads of grass in the showers and they ran from scorching to freezing the toilets were dirty was glad to get home to use my own bathroom, if people cleaned up after themselves and kept an eye on there kids would have made a difference, this could be a beautiful site and it’s a shame

Liked Location, the park and bar area, manager handled issues well.

Disliked Limited food menu and expensive, park swing snapped on my friends daughter, could have been a lot worse than it was! Arcade area not the best, few machines robbed me a few times.

Liked Friendly staff

Disliked Googled for a campsite with fishing, this came up saying private loch for a spot of fishing. This was the main reason for booking the holiday. The loch is completely un fishable wall to wall weeds. We ended up having to drive out to find other places.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Quiet, lovely scenery, friendly staff. Right next to a train track, which our kids liked but some may not, due to the noise. Loads of rabbit, which the kids enjoyed watching (apparently some people put in complaints about the amount of bunnies while we were there). toilet/showers were clean. Woodland area at the back for the kids to run around. WiFi is available in the pub but we opted for a tech free weekend so didn't really use it

Disliked Tent pitches are on a slant which makes it a bit difficult. Bin area was over filled meaning rubbish bags had to be left next to the bins in a massive pile

Local attractions

You could easily spend your entire break on the site, but there’s so much nearby that you’d be missing. Stop number one should be the town of Dumfries, half an hour away – it was the home of famed national poet Rabbie Burns and there’s plenty around to honour the wordsmith, but the museum and Moat Brae (JM Barrie’s childhood home) are also worth a look. Turn your wheels next to stunning Drumlanrig Castle (which TV addicts may recognise from the second season of Outlander) 45 minutes away, to wander the gardens or – if you’ve timed your visit well – tours and tea in the grand house itself, which houses artwork from Sandby, Gainsborough and Rembrandt. If you’re after a quickie wedding, it doesn’t get much quicker than a half-hour car journey down the A74 to Gretna Green, where 18th-century marriages were performed at the drop of a hat (or hammer, in the famous blacksmith’s shop). The village still does weddings, but they need a little bit more notice these days… Craving a city day or two? The shops, museums, galleries and tourist spots of Glasgow and Edinburgh are between an hour and an hour and a half away.
